ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE
SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES
MARCH 12, 2012 .
PRESENT: Peter Bell, Loretta Hatzel, Jean Lepre, Merle Levine, Eleanor Lingo,
Carolyn Peabody and Cindy Smith
Special guest- Supervisor Russell
Marjorie makes a motion to accept the minutes; Jean seconds; all are I favor.
OLD BUSINESS:
There is discussion re: MLK program Merle suggests in the future that we have a master
of ceremony.
Mom discussion follows suggesting that in the future we give the speaker a time limit (20
minutes?)
Eleanor spoke with Rev La Mothe and he was unable to attend this year due to another
comlnitment but will come next year.
There was some representation from ABTF at Greenport school black history month
program which featured a Tuskagee airman.
SCHOOL REPORTS:
Mattituck- findings from the survey have been reported. They now have focus groups for
the kids which is diverse.
A committee from the school is deciding how to respond to the smwey.
Southold-Jean and Eleanor went to Mr. Gamberg to discuss candidates for Erase Racism
The notice was too late but they will be happy to pm*ticipate in the future.
Greenport- Eleanor also spoke to Mr. Cornmanda will be happy to respond to Erase
Racism if they get notice in time as well.
· Can we contact Elaine Gross (Erase Racism) for a special session to be offered to the
East end (perhaps Riverhead)
POLICE REPORT:
The ABTF has an application from a Spanish speaking representative and she has offered
to help us to interview victim further to assure all that the case had a satisfactory outcome
if she can become a member. We are assured by Supervisor Russell that the process will
be looked into by the town for the next board meeting.
PICNIC- Second annual will be held on August 4, 2012. Val will chair the committee.
There is no rain date as the tent company cannot offer two dates to set up as they do it a
day in advance.
Cash donations went back to the donors.
NEW BUSINESS:
A donation to be given to Maureen' s Haven as a memorial to Lloyd Day (Marjorie's
husband) is taken up today. Eleanor will take responsibility to make sure the donation is
taken to Maureen's Haven.
Peter suggests having a meeting in February next year. He makes a motion to do so
which is seconded by Loretta. One idea is for each person on the committee to give a
thumbnail of an accomplishment of a historical black person and present it. Merle would
like to make it a town wide program. The motion is carried. Mom discussion will follow
next meeting.
There will be a committee for town website contact. Carolyn and Loretta will co-chair
The Diversity Art Show is to be explored and discussed at future meeting.
There is a motion made by Carolyn to adjourn at 11:25. all are in favor.
