East End Transportation Council Update
Neb reported that the Council did not meet in January and that the next meeting is
scheduled for February 8, 2012.
Supervisor's Requests
Truck Siqns on Alddch Lane, Matfituck
In Neb's memo of February 1, 2012 in response to the Supervisor's memo of January
24, 2012, he advised that the Commission, after weighing the issue, sees no need for such
signage. It was also noted that the request was from an individual and not from the local
community. In reaching its conclusion, the Commission observed that restricting truck traffic on
a straight town roadway in response to residential objectives would set a bad precedent for the
Town.
East Marion
Neb met with the Supervisor on January 30~ to discuss three issues related to the East
Marion area.
Bus Shelter Placement - Just East of the EMFD
Further input is awaited from the East Madon community concerning an
appropriate location. The matter will be referred to the SCDPW, as may later be necessary.
Crosswalk at the EMPO
As this "traffic calming" issue concerns Route 25, the NYSDOT will provide input
as to possible action.
Curb and sidewalk Repairs in Way of the Country Store (Angel's) and the EMPO
The possible availability of grant money concerning that issue, which is controlled
by the NYSDOT, will be investigated by the Planning Department.
Planning Board Requests
Harbes
The Planning Board awaits further advice from Harbes concerning its traffic study. In the
meantime, the proposed Hallock Lane road-widening issue north of Route 48 also remains
outstanding.
Pedestrian safety while crossing Route 48 from the parking area on the south side of
that roadway to the farmstand complex remains a major concern. It was suggested that
"Pedestrian Crossing" signs in way of that location may help to alleviate those concerns. Neb
will roach out to the Long Island Farm Bureau for its assistance. Privately placed illuminated
warning signs am also a possible solution - especially on autumn fall pumpkin-picking
weekends.
LIRR Scoot Trains
it has been reported in the local press that comments have been received from residents
of both Forks about possible negative impacts adsing from the eventual implementation of that
service proposal by the LIRR.
Orientation / Interpretive Signage Project - Need for a Special Meeting
Neb discussed two problems related to that project and he proposed a special meeting
with all concerned parties to arrive at workable solutions.
Problem #1 - The "horriflc" requirements of the NYSDOT for the placement of and
access to the signage on the Southold Historical Society's property have resulted in the deferral
of the SHS portion of the signage project. Instead, the RBA Group will continue the project in
the other previously discussed venues within the Town.
$90,000 has been budgeted for this project, including $80,000 for the installation of the
signage at the various venues and $10,000 to cover miscellaneous items. The Town has also
committed to a 20% "buy in". However, the cost of the signage is as yet unknown. Therefore,
Neb suggested that effective usage of those funds must be prioritized.
Accordingly, a total of four triangular "hamlet signs" will be placed at Town-owned
property in Southold, Cutchogue, Mattituck and also in the Village of Greenport. In addition, five
"interpretive signs" will be placed at certain other locations within the Town. In the meantime,
RBA will seek price quotations for building and installing one of each those sign types.
Problem #2 - RBA has again requested the furnishing of historical pictures for the
triangular signs. Therefore, the proposed meeting would include representatives of the
Commission, the Town and the interested historical societies covering for the four venues
referred to above.
Current Transportation Issues
Southold/Greenport Bus Shelters
At this time, it is anticipated that shelters will be erected in Southold Hamlet and the
Village of Greenport with a possible third one in East Marion.
Re,qulation of Vans & Limos
Councilman Talbot reported that the towns of Southampton and Riverhead have
adopted rules to regulate vans and limousines. He will provide documents related to those rules
for the Commission's review.
Old Business
None.
New Business
San Simeon by the Sound, Greenport - Motor Vehicle Accidents
The February 8th letter to the Town Board from the Administrator of that facility requested
the Board's assistance concerning the issue of traffic safety. The Administrator reported that
there had recently been two major car accidents at that location and that the vehicles involved
had lost control and struck cars parked in front of the facility.
After a discussion, San Simeon's request will be forwarded to the SCDPW for action.
