HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/12/2012Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes March 12, 2012 YB Present: Jacob Branker, Jillian Ruroede, Tom Rabbitt, Danielle Maisano, Irene Tsontakis- Bradley, Elaine White, Jeff Standish, Officer Bill Brewer, Karen McLaughlin, Supervisor Scott Russell, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Also Present: Lucille_Saladino, Main Stage Dance Academy. Absent: Anne Davey, Louise Hug, Megan Demarest, Andrea Nydegger, Robert Duffin and Harold Pleitez. Approval of Minutes of February '13, 20'12 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Report: Jacob reported of February meeting and upcoming dinner for guests at St. John's Place on March 29th. Job Shadow Day: Final reminder, March 30th. Youth Advisory Council Recruitment: Southold and Mattituck have two seniors graduating requiring replacements. All Greenport students are in the eleventh grade, it will be advantageous to recruit some students in 9th or 10th. Further Development of Goals/Objectives for 20'12: · Hosting Fishers lsland Students: Stillwaitingto hearfrom Dan Gillan. · Formalize Community Service Component with Schools: Supervisor agreed that Town will host "community service day" that will include youth community service opportunities. A meeting will be held to involve organizations seeking volunteers (non-profits, churches, superintendents, etc.) Phillip will draft a one- page concept paper to distribute at next meeting. Irene suggested having activity on Saturday so students will not have to miss school. · Create activities to serve middle school students: YB and YAC will host event on Friday, April 20th from 6-9 p.m. at the Peconic Lane Community Center. Suggestion made to contact Laura Jens-Smith for videos games. Will need 3 chaperones and 15 high school mentors to assist. · Explore Developing Youth Court: Phillip reported that Chief Flatley and Officer Brewer will accompany him to meeting of Riverhead Youth Court on March 28th. · Sponsor Osprey's Night: For Saturday, June 9th evening, agreed YAC will serve popcorn (Jeff will check with the Lions) and also serve small bottles of water (donation bucket will be on table with information Youth Bureau resources, etc.) Suggestion to contact Barbara Sheryll for donation of cotton candy machine from Harbes. Communities that Care Symposium: Phillip and Jeff will attend the March 14th substance abuse prevention symposium to discuss work of the Youth Bureau. YB Expiration of Terms: Four terms are expiring, need an answer by March 16th. Other: Lucille Saladino discussed her need for transportation for dance program for children with special needs. YB provided several suggestions to assist her. Next Meeting Date: April 23rd at 5:00 p.m. at the Human Resource Ctr. ]
