Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes
February 09, 2012
Present: Amy Maguire-Burns, Donielle Cardinale, Linton Duell, Steve Latham, Anthony
Cocheo, Supervisor Scott Russell, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Also present:
Mark Terry, Planning and Ken Schneider, Zoning Board of Appeals. Excused: John Stype,
Rona Smith, lan Wile and Carolyn Fahey.
Adopted proposed Mission Statement: The following was adopted: The Economic
Development Committee will facilitate the successful economic growth and revitalization of
existing businesses while attracting new commerce and cultural opportunities that complement
the true spirit and character of the community, resulting in long-term employment possibilities
and a diversified economic base thatwill further benefit the quality of life enjoyed by all who live
and visit the Town.
Developin,cl Short and Lonq Term Goals and Objectives: All in agreement with proposed
objectives as outlined in minutes from last meeting.
Capital One Buildinq Site Plan: Supervisor noted that covenants and restrictions associated
with the property can be extinguished. He also noted, along with Councilman Ruland that the
message should be clear that the Town will proactively support the redevelopment of site in
order to provide meaningful employment opportunities. The following ideas were suggested for
vacated building:
· Suggested industries: medical, financial/investment, technology, legal, assisted
living facility, mixed use
· Questions for Carolyn Fahey: How will Suffolk County market this potential
employment base, viability to issue open-door RFP, can Long Island Economic
Development Council assist?
Discussion of Liaison/Ombudsperson Position: The term "ombudsperson" is inappropriate
so position will be named "liaison." There were questions whether position will be "paid", how
much authority it has, etc. Most likely the position will be voluntary and appointed by the Town
Board and report to the Town Board to document issues and concerns of individuals trying to
develop businesses. Everyone should email a briefjob description to Phillip prior to next
meeting to detail what you envision the position will/should do...bullet form is preferred.
This will be further discussed at the next meeting.
Questionnaire for Listeninq Tour: lan has developed a draft and he will work with Amy and
Phillip to prepare a further draft for review prior to the next meeting.
Next Meetinq Date/Time: Thursday, February 23rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex
Conference Room (Capital One building, 2nd floor Young's Ave. & Route 25.)
Respectfully submitted, Phillip Beltz
