MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER 15, 2010
ATTENDANCE -- Patricia Fulford, Eleanor Lingo, Jean LePre, Peter Bel,
Rev. Heyward, Marjorie Day, Carolyn Peablody, Cynthia Smith, Merle Levine
ABSENT: Mike Domino, Val Shelby, Edina Cinchinowitz, Audrey Horton,
Betty Murphy
READING OF THE MINUTES - Marjorie Day corrected the spelling for the
Community Land Trust. She asked that we support their Board.
Rev. Heyward complained that there was a lack of gratitude for the Clinton AME
Zion Church and pastor - they felt "taken for granted." Rev Heyward purchased
additional soda, meat and watermelon when they ran out. Pat Fulford said that she
heard his complaint and will attend to his concerns. Carolyn Peabody
said that every organization should be named on the program, and each org.
was to be sent a thank-you. Peter Bel -Ironic that this is a Unity Picnic that
builds trust if people feel respected. We need to make sure that we demonstrate that
we respect others.
Recommended for next year's picnic: We will try to be unified in agreeing to the
group decisions. We need to set aside a fund for purchasing foods we run out of.
Eleanor, Jean and Pat visited stores personally to obtain donation - we would hope
to have more help or a more effective method.
Motion to accept the minutes - Rev. Heyward, second, Marjorie Day
CONCERN FOR THE RESIGNATION OF JEANNE MARIE MERKEL
Peter Bel - Jeanne Merkel made immense contributions to the Anti- Bias Task
Force and we should not just accept her resignation.
Pat Fulford -- She put a lot of work into the Picnic -- creating the data base
and sending out letters to all of the churches. It was part of the picnic that caused
Jeanne's feeling some unpleasantness. Pat is to invite her to come to speak about
her concerns.
Merle - we need a resolution to thank her for all her work.
SCHOOL REPORTS:
Mattituck: They are cooperation with the Stony Brook survey.
An article in the Suffolk Times provided clear evidence
of the impact of ABTF on attitude and program change.
Greenport: Concern was mostly for the coming Bond Issue vote to
Provide for badly needed renovations and for solar energy
Wind power.
SCHOOL REPORTS, cont.
Southold: One member, an attorney on the School Board is suspicious
Of the survey - as a "fishing expedition." Prefer to use their
Own survey, a two-page survey sans the detail in the Stony
Brook survey.
Cynthia Smith suggested that the ABTF members get a
School Calendar to inform them of Board Meetings.
A letter has been sent to Greenport and Mattituck for parental agreement
for the Stony Brook survey. The schools have not received enough consents
Greenport did not want (?) to come to speak to students. Mattituck did
talk with students during social studies classes.
When the survey is given, it is necessary for a director of students or for
one of us to be in each class as observers and to respond to questions.
Volunteers - Pat Fulford, Cynthia Smith, Jean LePre, Peter Bel, Marjorie Day,
Eleanor Lingo.
RE: INVITING JEANNE MERKEL - On Monday, December 6, 10 o'clock at Mike's.
PLANNING FOR MLK DAY CELEBRATION: also on Dec. 6.
Eleanor Lingo and Mike Domino will speak with the pastor of St. Luke's
Lutheran Church as a host church for the program.
Rev. Fulford has agreed to be guest speaker, and he will bring his choir.
NEW ITEMS.
Marjorie Day has asked for the Mission Statement be provided.
Complaint from Joanne Jackson that the Recreation Center did not
keep her informed. They led her to believe that she would take charge of the
program when Linda Ortez resigned. Eleanor Lingo, Mike Domino, Cynthia Smith,
and Jean LePre met with her. She was not notified of an opening and that was her
complaint of discrimination. Eleanor Lingo and Mike Domino spoke with Mayor
David Nyce. There was no job description and a new person had been hired for the
position. Joanne Jackson had run the summer program by herself, and has held the
the regular position for 11 years, and has supportive letters from teachers and
parents. Eleanor Lingo asked Mayor Nyce to speak with Joanne first, before there
was a meeting with Mr. Abatelli. The issue is harassment and discrimination of
race, sex and handicap.
Meeting adjourned, 11:45
