HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/23/2012Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Agenda January 23, 2012 YB Present: Anne Davey, Andrea Nydegger, Danielle Maisano, Jillian Ruroede, Robert Duffin, Louise Hug, Irene Tsontakis Bradley, Tom Rabbitt, Elaine White, Jeff Standish, Officer Bill Brewer, Karen McLaughlin, Councilman Bill Ruland, Councilman Al Krupski and Phillip Beltz. Absent: Harold Pleitez. Approval of Minutes of December 12, 2011 Welcome Youth Bureau Liaison: Phillip reported that Councilman Ruland will serve as Town Board liaison to Youth Bureau board. Job Shadow Day: Save the Date, March 30, 2012. Board members should think of shadow opportunities for 11th graders. Handouts provided. Youth Advisory Council Report: Anne reported of December 2011 community service project of baking cookies and making cards for San Simeon residents. John Halligan's Ryan's Story: Reminder of January 30, 2012 presentation. Hosting Fishers Island Students: It was agreed that this should tie in with existing event such as "Spirit Day"- "Homecoming" ,etc. To be further discussed. Youth Service America and Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center: Scholarship information disseminated. Building a Safe Community Conference, March 22nd Setting Goals/Objectives for 2012: Priorities further developed (see below): 1. Achieve greater diversity in Youth Bureau and YAC recruitment-Councilman Krupski suggested reaching out to Bill Grigonis of ROTC. Elaine White suggested Interact through Rotary as vehicle. 2. Partner with other entities to offer educational Teen Wellness Workshops (Bullying, Dealing with Stress, Alcohol and Other Drugs) etc. 3. Update Resource Directory-Irene, Louise and Elaine will update this year, it will not reflect the date/year on the cover. 4. Develop formal community service component with schools "humanity in action" that would be available to all students. This could include 'Wreathes Across America". Bob to bring additional information. YB could sponsor a meeting to involve organizations seeking volunteers, letter to superintendents, host in October. 5. Create activities to serve middle school students, 5th to 8th grades. Host Friday night, 6-9 p.m. at Rec. and Community Ctrs.-music, videos, games. Need 3 chaperones and 15 high school mentors to assist. 6. Explore developing Youth Court Next Meeting Date: February 13th at 5:00 p.m. at the Human Resource Ctr.
