LAND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
LAND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MEETING
MONDAY, MAY 18, 1998
MINUTES
Present were:
Dick Ryan, Joe Krukowski, Noreen McKenna, Tom
Madigan, Fred Lee, Jim Pim, Brian Murphy, Ed &
Angela Ernst, Tim Caufield, Melissa Spiro, Jim
Mulhall and members of the Kaloski family and Ray
Huntington.
The committee discussed the application of the Kaloski family and
reviewed the appraisal they had done. Jim Mulhall was the spokes-
person for the family. The farm is located on Alvah's Lane in
Cutchogue. There are approximately 23 acres on the east side and
34 acres on the west side. It is an active farm and an important
farm. It is adjacent to properties that are in preservation already.
Jim Mulhall gave a history of the farm, which was very interesting.
The committee then reviewed the application of Ed Ernst. This
property is located on the west side of Arshamomaque Pond. There
are approximately 35 acres that are farmed. There are also pristine
wetlands and meadows. They are restoring some of the farmland.
The total acreage is approximately 84 acres.
Ray Huntington of SOS NOW (Save Open Space Now) contacted Dick,
who asked him to come to our meeting. This is a new organization,
which set up its charter in March. Its main goals are to preserve
farming and farmland, prevent suburban sprawl and save the integrity
of the hamlets.
-2-
Fred Lee spoke with Fred Lappe re: his farm. Fred Lappe was
very disappointed with the appraisal done in 1995. However, at
that time he was removing most of the road frontage from the
property he was offering. Fred will speak to him again and see
if there are any changes to the road frontage and if there are
changes, perhaps he would be interested in having an updated
appraisal done. A motion was made by Jim Pim and seconded by
Noreen McKenna to recommend to the Town Board that Andy Stype
be contracted to update this appraisal, if there are changes in
the property to be submitted for development rights purchase. All
were in favor.
Cherepowich application - which is on our grant application list is
another candidate for partnership. Tim Caufield has been working
with Joe Cherepowich.
Van Nostrand - the neighbors were interested in purchasing the
property but this fe~l through. Tim was working with 4 or 5 people
who were going to form a partnership to purchase this property.
Nothing happening at this time.
Ruland property - survey is almost accomplished, It is still moving
forward.
Rutkosk~ appraisal - the committee reviewed this appraisal. A motion
was made by Noreen McKenna and seconded by Joe Krukowski to make
the offer to Mr, Rutkoski, All were in favor,
Raphael Vineyard - waiting for a survey map and a signed contract.
Dick gave the figures for the money left from the bond issue. Our
money is pretty much earmarked,
Reinhart application - there are plans for a minor sub. However the
development rights would be sold to the Town on the major part. More
things have to be done before an appraisal is done. A motion was made
by Noreen McKenna and seconded by Jim Pim to have Dick talk to the
board about an appraisal, All were in favor,
The next meeting is set for Monday, June 15, 1998.
With no further business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned
at 9:45 p.m.
