Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes
January 26, 2012
Present: Rona Smith, John Stype, lan Wile, Carolyn Fahey, Amy Maguire-Burns,
Donielle Cardinale, Linton Duell, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Also present:
Mayor David Nyce and Christian Baiz. Excused: Steve Latham, Anthony Cocheo and
Supervisor Scott Russell.
Review and Discussion of Proposed Mission Statement: The following was agreed
upon, to be finalized at next meeting;
The Economic Development Committee will facilitate the successful economic growth
and revitalization of existing businesses while attracting new commerce and cultural
opportunities that complement the true spirit and character of the community, resulting
in long-term employment possibilities and a diversified economic base that will further
benefit the quality of life enjoyed by all who live and visit the Town.
Discussion of Suffolk County Industrial/Commercial Incentive Initiative: Phillip
and Carolyn met with the Town Board to report that the committee would like the Town
Board's support to pursue further with the Planning Dept. and Planning Board. It was
favorably received by the Town Board and Ms. Fahey reported that she had a very
productive meeting with the Planning Board and staff. They will begin developing
targeted businesses and industries as well as incentive areas.
Developinq Short and Lonq Term Goals and Obiectives:
Short term: first quarter of 2012
· Develop Mission Statement
· Recommend to Town Board to establish a "liaison" - "ombudsperson" to work
with Town departments to streamline the vetting process to make the Town more
"business-friendly."
· Ensure that the former Capital One Operations Center in Mattituck is re-
developed expeditiously to provide employment opportunities for residents. This
will be further discussed at the next meeting and Phillip will provide site plan
information.
Short term: second quarter of 20~2
· Facilitate a "listening tour" - schedule community-based meetings throughout
Town to meet with businesses to hear their concerns and their needs. This will
accommodate business owners' schedules (early morning, late evening, etc.)
· Develop questionnaire of"What Local Businesses Need and Want." lan and
Amy will work with Phillip to develop and will have a draft within a month.
Possibly create one survey for the listening tour to acquire general information
and another later to address specific needs.
Short term: third quarter of 2012
· Sponsor Information and Resource Forum for Local Businesses.
· Reach out to Paulette Satur of the Long Island Regional Economic Development
Council to attend a meeting.
· Develop cutting edge website page that will assist in attracting businesses,
provide resources, etc.
Pending:
· Address impediments of high commercial rents.
· Address issues oftelecommuters.
· Replicate successful business models in localities similar to the Town.
Mayor David Nyce-Memorial Day Weekend Tall Ships Event in Greenport: Mayor
Nyce informed the committee of the upcoming Memorial Day event that anticipates to
draw over 50,000 visitors to the area providing a stimulus to the local economy. The
Greenport Business Improvement District is seeking support from the North Fork
Promotion Council and North Fork Chamber of Commerce as well as other entities,
including the Town Board. If anyone has any suggestions for supporting the event,
contact the mayor.
Next Meetinq Date/Time: Thursday, February 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex
Conference Room (Capital One building, 2nd floor Young's Ave. & Route 25.)
