LAND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MEETING
MONDAY, JUNE 15, 1998
MINUTES
Present were: Dick Ryan, Joe Krukowski, Tom Madigan, Michael
Croteau, Fred Lee, Melissa Spiro and Ray Huntington.
Dick had asked both Melissa Spiro and Ray Huntington to attend
the meeting. The group SOS NOW (Save Open Space Now) held a
press conference today at Pelligrini Vineyards announcing their
formation. The spokesman for the group said that development is
heading our way. The goals of this organization are: 1. To
preserve farming and farmland. 2. To prevent suburban sprawl.
3. Preserve the integrity of the hamlet centers. The constraint
now is money. It possibly would take $125,000,000 to purchase the
development rights on the north fork. Supervisor Cochran also
spoke at this gathering. Dick also attended.
Melissa Spiro is working on the protected lands map. Things are
getting updated very slowly. When the map is completed, it will be
very helpful to this committee. Melissa also attended the Code Committee
Meeting, which was on greenhouses. The discussion was basically
about the buildings. If there is enough land, the setback would be
400' from the road.
The 2% transfer tax legislation is coming out of the assembly this
week and heading for the governor's desk. The referendum would
then be put on the November ballot.
Another cleanup endeavor at Fort Corchaug is scheduled for Saturday,
June 27, 1998.
Dick showed the committee a sign that Peconic Land Trust puts on
their preserved land and a draft of a possible sign for land preser-
vation and open space. The committee felt this was a good idea to
-2-
show the people of the Town where their money was going to preserve
land. Michael Croteau said he will make up a sign and then leave it
with the secretary.
The Peconic Land Trust and the Nature Conservancy are now under
contract .with Suffolk County to help them with their land acquisition
projects.
Kaloski property - a public hearing will be hel(Jon this property on
Tuesday, June 23, 1998.
Raphael Vineyards - The building will have to be changed if put
where they want it. If not, it would have to be moved back 500'
from the road. Dick heard from Petrocelli's attorney. There is
agreement on the price per acre but not the number of acres.
Reinhardt application - we cannot accept application until he has land
plowed up and planted.
Christian Baiz - some of parcels offered are not in farming at this time.
Negotiations on the Fishers Island parcel goes on.
Arshamomaque project - still on hold awaiting grant application made to
state for $500,000.
The county is working on some projects in the Town, particularly in the
watershed area at Laurel Lake.
Van Nostrand - agreed to offer and then changed his mind.
Dzugas-Smith -'on County's list.
Cherepowich and Ernst properties - on County's list.
Dick thanked Tom Madigan for his service to the committee and wished him
well.
The next meeting of the Land Preservation Committee is scheduled for
Monday, July 20, 1998.
With no further business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned at
9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted
Secretary
