Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes December 07, 2011 Present: Rona Smith, Steve Latham, John Stype, lan Wile, Carolyn Fahey, Amy Maguire-Burns, Anthony Cocheo, Linton Duell, Donielle Cardinale, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Councilman Bill Ruland. Introductions: Overview of Orqanization/Committee Expectations: Supervisor Russell opened the meeting stating that committee members are aware of the committee's purpose in promoting economic development in the Town through assisting existing businesses and/or aiding the development of new businesses. In addition he suggested that when necessary the committee may be asked to vet commercial applications and make recommendations. Everyone was given a hard copy of the Economic chapter and asked to review prior to the next meeting. It was agreed that initially the committee will meet two times a month on Thursdays. Review of Hiqhliqhts of Economic Chapter: Below are highlights of the chapter: · Retention of Existing Businesses · Promoting Economic Development to Enhance Tax Base · Creating Vital Hamlet Centers · Supporting Agriculture, Aquaculture and Maritime Uses · Foster Tourism Action Items for 2012: Below are suggested action items for 2012: Committee members should bring additional suggestions to the next meeting. · Develop Mission Statement · Adopt Suffolk County Industrial/Commercial Incentive Initiative · Development of Committee Website Page · Meetings with NF Promotion Council, Chambers of Commerce, Southold Business Alliance · Developing Questionnaire of What Local Businesses Need and Want · Sponsoring Information and Resource Forum for Local Businesses · Collaborate with the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council The Suffolk County Industrial/Commercial Incentive Initiative is a priority because municipalities have been asked to adopt no later than February 2012. Carolyn Fahey distributed materials for review to be discussed at the next meeting with future discussion with the Town Board with recommendation for adoption. Another suggestion is for the Town to establish a "liaison" - "ombudsperson" to work with Town departments to streamline the vetting process for businesses to make the Town more "business-friendly." In addition this could include making recommendations of policies and procedures for Town departments. Finally suggestion made to ensure that the Capital One Operations Center in Mattituck is re-developed in an expeditious and suitable manner providing employment opportunities for residents.
