Overview of Orqanization/Committee Expectations:
Supervisor Russell opened the meeting stating that committee members are aware of
the committee's purpose in promoting economic development in the Town through
assisting existing businesses and/or aiding the development of new businesses. In
addition he suggested that when necessary the committee may be asked to vet
commercial applications and make recommendations. Everyone was given a hard
copy of the Economic chapter and asked to review prior to the next meeting. It was
agreed that initially the committee will meet two times a month on Thursdays.
Review of Hiqhliqhts of Economic Chapter: Below are highlights of the chapter: · Retention of Existing Businesses
· Promoting Economic Development to Enhance Tax Base
· Creating Vital Hamlet Centers
· Supporting Agriculture, Aquaculture and Maritime Uses
· Foster Tourism
Action Items for 2012: Below are suggested action items for 2012: Committee
members should bring additional suggestions to the next meeting. · Develop Mission Statement
· Adopt Suffolk County Industrial/Commercial Incentive Initiative
· Development of Committee Website Page
· Meetings with NF Promotion Council, Chambers of Commerce, Southold
Business Alliance
· Developing Questionnaire of What Local Businesses Need and Want
· Sponsoring Information and Resource Forum for Local Businesses
· Collaborate with the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council
The Suffolk County Industrial/Commercial Incentive Initiative is a priority because
municipalities have been asked to adopt no later than February 2012. Carolyn Fahey
distributed materials for review to be discussed at the next meeting with future
discussion with the Town Board with recommendation for adoption.
Another suggestion is for the Town to establish a "liaison" - "ombudsperson" to work
with Town departments to streamline the vetting process for businesses to make the
Town more "business-friendly." In addition this could include making recommendations
of policies and procedures for Town departments.
Finally suggestion made to ensure that the Capital One Operations Center in Mattituck
is re-developed in an expeditious and suitable manner providing employment
opportunities for residents.
Developinq Lonq Term Goals and Objectives: Possible ideas to consider: · Incentives to lower commercial rents
· Address issues oftelecommuters
· Replicating successful business models in localities similar to the Town
Next IVleetinq Date/Time: Thursday, January 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the Town Hall
Meeting Room.
Respectfully submitted,
Phillip Beltz
