Minutes of November 14, 2011
Present: Louise Hug, Tom RabbEt, Anne Davey, ElaineWhite, Danielle Maisano, Jillian Ruroede, Jeff Standish,
Officer Bill Brewer, Karen McLaughlin, Councilman Vincent Orlando and Phillip Beltz. Excused/Absent: Andrea
Nydegger, Robert Duffin, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley and Harold Pleitez,
Approval of Minutes of October 17, 2011
Comprehensive Plan-Youth Development and Recreation:
The draft chapter of Parks and Recreation may be viewed on the Town's website under "Hot Links,
Comprehensive Plan Southold 2020." Comments should be provided no later than November 16th.
Discussion of Committees: The following committees will need further participation of Board: Teen
Wellness Workshops, Fundraising, Resource Directory, Internships and Employment.
Selection of Youth Bureau Liaisons from Youth Advisory Council: Rather than delegate a liaison,
Phillip will ask at YAC meeting.
Job Shadow Day: Southold Business Advisory Council will host Job Shadow day, March 30, 2012
and Youth Bureau board will participate to the best of their ability. Begin to think about opportunities.
Suffolk County Youth Bureau Logos: Artwork distributed for selection.
Make A Wish Foundation: Youth Bureau board and Youth Advisory Council will participate in writing
letters to Santa enabling Macy's to donate one dollar to the foundation for every letter received.
Deadline for submission of letters to Phillip is December 15th.
North Fork Alliance (Tricia Poole and Laura Jens Smith): NFA received funding for an additional five
years. They discussed upcoming presentation of Father Pizzarelli at Mattituck High School library.
Support for John Halligan's Presentation-Ryan's Story: Mattituck High School is seeking financial
support from the Youth Bureau to sponsor a presentation to parents on the dangers of cyber bullying
Mr. Halligan's son committed suicide due to bullying and he is viewed as a powerful speaker. He will
also collaborate with Greenport and Southold to speak with students regarding bullying who will also
lend financial support. The board unanimously supported the YB providing $500 towards this effort.
Planning Ideas for the Future: Board members were encouraged to think of new ideas for
implementation. Jobs and internships will be further developed and formalized, possibly Job Fair.
Anne suggested recreating "Anti-Bias Education Day" and Jillian recommended initiatives to combat
bullying A "pre-prom" forum on youth and substance use, possibly with discussion on Social Host law
with assistance of NFA. In addition it was suggested to develop a teamwork exercise involving the
different school districts as well as develop a parade with schools to celebrity diversity. To be further
discussed.
Location and Next Meeting Date: December 12th at 5:00 p.m. at Human Resource Center.
