HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/17/2011 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of October 17, 2011 YB Present: Anne Davey, Elaine White, Danielle Maisano, Jillian Ruroede, Jeff Standish, Officer Bill Brewer, Karen McLaughlin, Andrea Nydegger and Phillip Beltz. Excused/Absent: Robert Duffin, Louise Hug, Tom RabbEt, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Councilman Vincent Orlando and Harold Pleitez, Introductions-Resolution New Membership: Barbara Sheryll has resigned from the Youth Bureau board and two additional members were appointed by the Town Board, Danielle Maisano and Jillian Ruroede. Approval of Minutes of Sept. 26, 2011 Comprehensive Plan-Youth Development Distribution of list of priorities developed from September's joint meeting with Youth Advisory Council. They are as follows: '1. Indoor Recreational hub with pool and gymnasium 2. Youth Court 3. Development of programs/activities for grades 5 to 8 4. Community service 5. Employment and internships 6. Transportation Discussion of Committees: The following are committees that the board participated in over the last several years: Teen Wellness Workshops, Fundraising, Resource Directory, Internships and Employment. It was agreed that "wellness workshops" are addressed by schools and that the board should not duplicate these efforts. Andrea noted that Mattituck will feature a speaker (John Halligan) on bullying in the New Year that the Youth Bureau could sponsor. It was suggested that the Town post notices of upcoming speakers at schools that are open to the public on Channel 22 for Board of Education meetings, Phillip will determine if possible. East End Youth Leadership Summit: Scheduled for October 2'l~t-schools will be well-represented Job Shadow Day: Southold Business Advisory Council will host Job Shadow day, March 30th. It was agreed that members of Youth Bureau participate to the best of their ability. Dr. Amador's Presentation: Andrea reported that Dr. Amador provided two discussions, one with students emphasizing importance of early intervention with treatment (primarily schizophrenia) and the other to parents on depression. Suffolk County Youth Bureau Initiative: County Youth Bureau has engaged students of Briarcliffe College to assist with developing marketing and branding tools for Youth Bureaus. Municipal Youth Bureaus will also be part of these efforts. Planning Ideas for the Future: Board members are encouraged to think of new ideas for implementation. Jobs and internships will be further developed and formalized, possibly Job Fair. Location and Next Meeting Date: November '14th at 5:00 p.m. at Peconic Lane Community Center.
