LAND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
LAND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MEETING
MONDAY, JUNE 30~ 1997
MINUTES
Present were:
Joe Gold, Dick Ryan, Tom Madigan, Jim Rich, Michael
Croteau, Jim Pim, Robert Hughes, Bob VanBourgondien
and Tim Caufield
Robert Hughes, an attorney representing the Latham family, spoke
about the 64 acre parcel that the Town of Southold had purchased
the development rights on in Orient. There is an 8 acre parcel
adjourning the 64 acre parcel. These 8 acres are located on Narrow
River Road. The Lathams have someone interested in purchasing
half of the farm. The interested parties want to make this a horse
farm. Therefore, they would like to swap these 8 acres (that do
not have the development rights sold) for a piece that the Town has
purchased the development rights on to build the house. The committee
told Mr. Hughes that they would like to know where the building envelope
would be located and the size of it. Also, the committee would like to
know where the road would be located. Mr. Hughes will try to get this
information. The committee felt that this might be a dangerous precedent
to set. According to the code, once the development rights have been
sold, these rights cannot be further alienated.
The committee reviewed the L & R Vineyards application. This property
is 117+ acres located on C.R. 48 and Elijah's Lane, Mattituck. The comm-
ittee decided to ~able this application until the other appraisals come in,
as there might not be enough money to purchase this large piece at this
time.

The committee reviewed the Christian Baiz appraisal on Ackerly
Pond Lane, which came in at $72,500.00 for 10.8 acres. However,
all 10.8 acres are not being farmed. Some of this acreage would
have to be removed. The committee decided to table this until
the proper acreage could be determined.
Joe discussed the request for proposal for the Federal grant with
the committee. There is only one grant per state. Perhaps if
several towns joined together they could apply for Suffolk County.
Joe will contact the Suffolk' County Department of Planning.
Jim Pim suggested that there might be some value to try and main-
tain the integrity of the villages and that perhaps we could try to
secure farmland around the village boundaries.
Tim Caufield of the Peconic Land Trust thanked the committee for
their help with the purchasing of Fort Corchaug. The committee
feels that the Peconic Land Trust has been very helpful to the
committee and the Town in the coordination with different projects.
They have the expertise in working with the property owners.
Joe informed the committee that this would be his last meeting.
Jim Rich made a motion to thank Joe for all his hard work as chairman.
This motion was seconded by Tom Madigan and all were in favor.
At the next meeting the committee will have to discuss the possibility
of another bond issue for November.
A motion was made by Jim Rich and seconded by Tom Madigan to
adjourn the meeting at 9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
~'~,~.
