UNCONDITIONED SPACES. AS INDICATED IN ECCCNYS SOS.3.B. FLEX DUCT MUST HAVE
R-VALUE LABELS ON THE OUTSIDE J-ACKET IECCCNYS 102.5.3).
DUCTS AND PIPES IN UNCONDITIONED ATTICS. GARAGES, BASEMENTS AND CRAWLSPACES
MUST BE INSULATED WHENEVER POSSIBLE, MECHANICALS ARE TO BE LOCATED INSIDE
THE INSULATED ENVELOPE OF THE HOUSE.
IF HEATING DUCTS ARE INSTALLED IN OUTSIDE WALLS THE INSTALLER MUST PROVIDE
R-l~' RIGID INSULATION BETWEEN DUCT AND EXTERIOR SHEATHING.
DUCT SEALING:
DUCT SEALING IS REQUIRED ON ALL LOW-PRESSURE DUCTWORK (ECCCNYS 503.3.~). ALL
PORTIONS OF STUD BAYS OR ,TOIST CAVITIES USED AS DUCTWORK MUST ALSO BE
SEALED. ALL CONNECTIONS AND SEAMS {EXCEPT LONGITUDINAL ~TOINTS THAT LOCK}
MUST BE SEALED WITH EIT'HER MASTIC OR FIBROUS TAPE EMBEDDED IN MASTIC.
TAPES MEETING UL lglA MAY BE USED FOR RIGID FIBER DUCTS, TAPES MEETING
UL IglB MAY BE USED FOR FLEX DUCTS. DUCT TAPE IS NOT ALLOWED FOR DUCT
FOUNDATION:
CRAWL SPACE:
THE FLOOR OVER A VENTED CRAWLBPACE CONSTRUCTION, IF APPLICABLE, MUST BE
INSULATED TO THE SAME R-VALUE AS A FLOOR OVER AN UNCONDITIONED BASEMENT,
ACCORDING TO THE COMPLIANCE ANALYSIS~
UNCOND[T~ONE:D BASEMENTS:
I). INSULATE T,HE FLOOR ABOVE THE BASEMENT. REFER TO PLANS FOR REQUIRED R-VALUE.
2). INSULATE THE STAIRWELL BETWEEN THE CASEMENT AND CONDITIONED FIRST FLOOR.
S). INSULATE HEATING PIPES AND AIR DUCTS IN THE BASEMENT.
~). SEAL DUCTa IN BASEMENT.
5). SEAL AIR LEAKS IN THE FLOOR SYSTEM BETWEEN THE BASEMENT AND THE FIRST FLOOR.
SUCH AS WIRING AND PLUMBING PENETRATIONS, AND WEATHER STRIPPING ON THE
BASEMENT DOOR.
FRAMING:
SEALING BAND 3'OISTS DURING CONSTRUCTION:
1). CAULK EXTERIOR SHEATHING TO TOE PLATE WHEN ASSEMBLING FRAMING
2). APPLY ADHESIVE TO TOP OF BAND 3'OIST AND LAY SUBFLOOR OVER
3). CAULK SILL PLATE TO EXTERIOR SHEATHING WHEN NAILING IN PLACE.
~-). CAULK OR USE ADHESIVE BETWEEN DRYWALL AND TOE PLATE.
SEALING BAND 3'OISTS AFTER FRAMING {ALTERNATE METHOD):
1). INSERT RIGID FOAM BLOCKS ON INSIDE OF BATTS IN FLOOR ,TOISTS, ALONG
EXTERIOR PERIMETER, AND FLUSH WITH SILL PLATE.
2). CAULK ALL FOUR SIDES OF FOAM BLOCKS AND ,TOISTS UNDER FLOOR ~TOISTS.
1ST. FLOOR DECK.
1). FULL INSULATE 3'OIST CAVITIES
2). INSULATION TO BE SUPPORTED WITH WIRE NODS.
EXTERIOR OPENING HEADERS
SANDWICH RIGDD INSULATION BETWEEN HEADER COMPONENTS IF HEADER
MATERIAL IS THINNER THAN WALL CAVITY.
LADDER BLOCKENG FOR INTERIOR PARTITION WALLS:
I. PROVIDE HORIZONTAL BLOCKING AT 4~" 0 C AND AS NEEDED FOR NAILERS,
2). FIT CAVITy INSULATION CAREFULLY AROUND HORIZONTAL BLOCKING.
3). PROVIDE A NAILER ON THE TOP OF THE BOTTOM PLATE FOR BASEBOARD TRIM
~). TOENAIL INTERIOR PARTITION STUD TO TOP AND BOTTOM PLATES.
CAVITY SEALING ON EXTERIOR WALL:
SEAL ALL EDGES TO MAKE AIR BARRIER CONTINUOUS.
EXTERIOR CANTILEVER FLOOR WITH INTERIOR AIR SEALING:
1). SEAL ALL PENETRATIONS THROUGH THE BLOCKING AND THE SUBFLOOR
2). SEAL SOFFIT AND BAND ~TOIST WELL ENOUGH TO PREVENT WINDWASHING.
B). SEAL SUBFLOOR ,TOISTS WITH ADHESIVE.
~-)~ SEAL INTERSECTION BETWEEN ,TOISTS AND WALL WITH SOLID BLOCKING. THE
BLOCKING SHOULD SIT ON THE INNER EDGE OF THE SUPPORTING PLATE
ATTACHED GARAGE.
1). IF LIVINB SPACE ABOVE, SEAL ALL SUBFLOOR PENETRATIONS ABOVE GARAGE
CEILING WIT[H ADHESIVE
2).SEAL GARAGE CEILING FRAMING AND DRYWALL TO KEEP OUTSIDE AIR FROM
PIPE AND DUCTS.
S). SEAL ALL PENETRATIONS THROUGH BLOCKIHG.
