Keynote Speaker
Eugene Murphy, the Commissioner of Planning and Development for
the Town of [slip is one of the most accomplished professional
planners on Long Island with over 30 years experience at the
munldpal level. During this time he has worked directly with the Town
Board, the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals in the
development and implementation of planning policy, much of which
has been on the leading edge of professional planning practice.
Gene received a Bachelors Degree in Economics from City College of
New York and a Masters in Architecture and U~oan Planning from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute. As Commissioner, Gene administers a
large department that incorporates all planning, building, engineering,
land management and economic development functions for the Town.
He ha~ completed many highly successful comprehensive plans,
authored significant zoning code changes and served as project
manager for an ambitious community improvement program. His
accomplishments indude the landmark study, Sunrise Highway
Corridor Plan and the innovative zoning code that created the
Veterans Memorial Highway Industrial Corridor DistricL Gene also was
a leading contributor to the planning of the nationally recognized
redevelopment known as College Woods in Central [slip.
Gene is a charter member of the American [r~dtute of Certified
Planners (NC'P) and has also served as an adjunct professor at SUNY
Old Westbury. In acknowledgment of his accomplishments, Gene has
been recognized by numerous organizations including the Suffolk
County Legislature, Central [slip Civic Council, New York State Marine
Education Association and the Suffolk Academy of Law.
