Minutes of April 11,2011
Present: sara Maaiki, Louise Hug, Barbara Sheryll, Elaine White, Karen McLaughlin, Jeff Standish, Officer
William Brewer and Phillip Beltz. Also present Laura Smith of North Fork Alliance.
Review of March 14, 2011: Approved.
Presentation of North Fork Alliance from Laura Smith: The North Fork Alliance (NFA) is
a Drug Free Community Coalition within the non-profit Long Island Network of Community
Services (LINCS). Funding through a SAMSHA grant will expire in September. There have
been many changes in leadership with limited community support that may impede their
chances of renewal of funding. Laura reported that they are currently developing a website
and requested and received permission by the Board to include the Southold Youth Bureau
Resource Directory on the website.
Anti-bias Education Day Update: No report.
Teen Wellness Workshop Initiatives:
Laura indicated that NFA may be able to assist with the development of a workshop for
"Alcohol and Other Drugs". A few suggested names for speakers included John Yenezia,
Father Frank andTim Stewart. "Bullying" topic has been covered by schools and possibly
best not to consider implementing at this time. Suggestion made to incorporate the
'~A/ellness Fair" at the Summer Jam.
Youth Bureau Photo Contest for Website: Phillip reported that no one has submitted any
photos for the website contest and encouraged additional discussion and dissemination with
schools.
Jewish Community Relations Council Recoqnition for YAC: One student and three
Youth Bureau board members have responded affirmatively. To be discussed later with the
Youth Advisory Council.
Recreation Brochure Deadline: April 18th is deadline for insert in Suffolk Times. Phillip will
create a "Save the Date" copy for Summer Jam, Family Movie Nite, etc.
Speaker Re,clistry Application: Draft disseminated for review and comments.
Youth Advisory Council Recruitment: Seeking diverse group of youth for YAC.
May Speakers: Phillip reported that Lou Medina, director of SC Youth Bureau and Pat
Policastro, SCYB programs will attend the May meeting.
Next Meetinq Date: Monday, May 9th at 5:30 p.m. at HRC.
