Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of March 14, 2011
Present:
Sara Maaiki, Jessica Stumpf, Lauren Salmiery, Louise Hug, Barbara Sheryll, Andrea Nydegger, Elaine
White, Tom Rabbitt, Karen McLaughlin, Jeff Standish, Officer William Brewer, Councilman William Ruland and
Phillip Beltz.
Review of January 10, 2011:
Approved.
Report of Active Subcommittees: YAC met in February to cook and deliver meal
for Maureen’s Haven initiative.
Anti-bias Education Day Update:
??
Greenport- Tom reported that school may have a follow-up activity in the
spring following its December Werner Reich presentation.

Southold- Elaine reported that school will feature a full-day workshop with
Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY)
??
Mattituck- Andrea reported that school featured Werner Reich in February,
Rory Forrestal featured a workshop on bullying in March. In addition, they
have formed an “Anti-Bias Club.”

Surveys-Phillip reported that Carolyn Peabody indicated that surveys have
been approved by Stony Brook and will soon be administered in Greenport
and Mattituck schools.
Workshop Initiatives:
??
Teen Wellness Workshops “Alcohol and Other Drugs” and “Bullying”-
Phillip requested assistance with development of a subcommittee. Elaine
noted that workshops have not been successful in drawing participation.
Possibly topics can be incorporated into something else in the future (e.g.
“Teen Speak Out”
??
Continue Anti-Bias Education- Schools will continue their efforts.
Youth Bureau Photo Contest for Website: Flyer distributed of photo contest for
Town’s website. Youth Bureau board members will judge photos.
Recognition for YAC: Suffolk County’s State Senate Delegation and State
Assembly Delegation along with the Suffolk County Legislature in partnership with the
Jewish Community Relations Council will recognize Suffolk County youth working to
create a more civil society. The YAC is being recognized for their “anti-bias
th
education efforts.” The event will take place May 5, 7 p.m. at SC Com. College.
Board Membership Renewals: Several memberships are up for renewal.
Youth Advisory Council Recruitment: It is time to consider recruiting YAC
members for next school year, minimally replace graduating YAC members.

Guest Speaker: Crystal Anderson of YES initiative did not show.
Intergenerational Activities: Karen reported that she and Phillip met to discuss
development of meaningful intergenerational activities rather than “snow shoveling.”
To determine what youth and seniors would like to do, a meeting will be held in early
summer to explore ideas. Lauren requested that meeting take place earlier.
April Speakers: Phillip reported that Laura Smith of the North Fork Alliance
requested if she and Steve Watson of East End Arts Council could attend the next
meeting. Discussion regarding purpose/protocol of speakers attending meetings.
Karen stated that guests should submit a “request form” for the board to review—it
was agreed that this would be helpful. Several members expressed concern that NF
Alliance local leadership continually changes and some members have not had a
positive experience. With additional discussion the board recognized that Alliance
could be beneficial in distributing its resources that could align with Youth Bureau
objectives—Andrea stated that they may be able to fund workshops such as
“Challenge Day-If you Really Knew Me”. The board agreed that both could attend
April meeting and request forms will be utilized in the future.

Next Meeting Date: Monday, April 11th at 5:30 p.m. at HRC.
