Joe Gold introduced John Halsey, Tim Caufield, Andy Johnson and
Thornton Smith to the members of the committee. John Halsey
explained the involvement of the Peconic Land Trust in the purchasing
of the Joyce Terry property, the George Wells property and Diana
Latham's farm. He also told the committee that there are may oppor-
tunities for the Peconic Land Trust to work with the T~wn of Southold,
as they have in other Towns. One being the Baxter prop, erty and
the other the property of Thornton Smith in Mattituck.
According to Mr. Halsey, the original plan for Mr. Smith's property
was a cluster plan of 35 lots. However, Mr. Smith decided not to go
this route and approximately 32 acres are being offered into the
land preservation program. The remaining acreage is woodlands.
Mr. Halsey also discussed with the committee Mr. Baxter's new proposal
for the Fort Corchaug property. In this new plan the Town would
purchase approximately 37 acres, fronting on Route 25 and including
the Fort site.

Joe Gold thanked Mr. Halsey, Mr. Caufield and Mr. Johnson for
enlightening the committee on the workings of the Peconic Land
Trust and their interest in the Fort Corchaug and Thornton Smith
properties.
After a lengthy review of Mr. Baxter's proposal, a motion was made by
Tom Madigan, subject to the Planning Board's approval and a review
of the updated appraisal, that the committee recommends that the Town
Board consider the purchase of this property by the Town. This
motion was seconded by Jim Pim and all were in favor.
At this time the committee decided to table the Thornton Smith
application so that further examination of the property can be made
by the committee.
The committee reviewed the DeChiaro application and decided that it
doesn't meet the criteria of property purchased under the open space
program. The secretary will send a letter to the DeChiaros.
The application of John Nierodzik was also discussed. It was determined
that this property is not currently being farmed and therefore, doesn't
meet the criteria for farmland preservation.
With no further business to be conducted, the meeting was adjourned
at 9:45 p.m.
Respectuflly submitted,
Joyce M. Wilkins
Secretary
