Critique of the Martin Luther King Program: Reconsider use of"America" instead of the National Anthym Beautifully done, flowed smoothly, Rev. Fulford was excellent, Singers were very good, and there was a full house, Including ministers from a number of churches. Pat Fulford's concern: That the Planning Committee have full Decision over the program to be presented. Difficulty over the fee payment: Speaker needs to be informed Of the fee and given the appropriate documents. The Fee must be approved first through the accounting office. There were hurt feeling around these issues, however, as Peter Bet Advised - it was good to get it out in the open, we need to be able to be creative in planning the program, and that it is important for us to work together to maintain "the door that people need to be able to knock on for help. Peter wrote a critique of the program: It was a fine program and Rev. Fulford gave a wonderful sermon. He spoke about helping our neighbors in peril and being able ahd willing to do good for others. It brought to mind Obama's speech after the funeral service for those people who lost their lives and Congresswoman Guifford's wounding. He told of Mr. Matthews, a black and gay man who ran to the Congresswoman's side and held a cloth to the side of her head to stop the bleeding from the wound to her head. Obama called him a hero. When Mr. Matthews took the mike he said he was not a hero! He said '~the people who went to the meeting on the corner to hear ~ongresswoman Guiffords were the heroes for they were participating m making Democracy work. They were making sure that there was a door to knock on and:try and:solve some of our country's problems: That got me to~ thinking that all of us here are heroes for we here in the ABTF are making sure that the door is strong and that it will be here for people to knock on so that people's problems will be considered in a fair and Thoughtful way and solutions will be found within our democracy!" A number of proposals were considered, but since we did not have a quorum, we could not act on any of them: Proposal to use ABTF funds to provide Erase Racism programs to teachers again. Prepare a letter to Sgt Reeks of the Hate Crimes Task Force, thanking him for his help to us in the past. Checking with Phillip Beltz concerning our involvement in the County Youth Board. Rev. Hayward was concerned about roofs in houses in Greenport that needed serious repair. Suggestions were offered that perhaps Housing Alliance or Habitat for Humanity might be contacted.
