A regular meeting of the Southold Town Land Preservation Committee
was held on Tuesday, January 18, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. at Southold
Town Hall.
Art Ross, former chairman of the Land Preservation Committee explained
to the new members the background of the farmland and open space
programs. The first farmland bond for $1,750,000 was passed in 1983.
There have been two farmland bonds and one open space bond. When
the farmland funds were used up, we coordinated our efforts with the
County by having appraisals done and then forwarding them to the
County for acceptance into their farmland program. In 1991 the Farmland
Preservation Committee and the Open Space Committee were combined into
the Land Preservation Committee. After its formation and the passage
of another bond, the Land Preservation Committee received many applications
from property owners who wanted the Town to purchase the development
rights on their properties. After reviewing the applications, the committee
made their recommendations to the Town Board. During 1992 and 1993 the
-2-
Town purchased the development rights on the following properties:
Madeline Moelius - Main Rd., Southold
Barry Berkman q Oregon Rd., Mattituck
Adrian ~ourtenay III - Wickham Ave., Mattituck
Parker & Betsy Dickerson - Youngs Ave., Southold
Ralph P?gliese q Bridge La., .~utchogue
Hope Gillispie/Diana Alford - Main Rd., Orient
Catherine Simicich - Bergen Ave., Mattituck
Spectacle Ridge ~ Oregon Rd., Cutchogue
At the present time there is $12,704.33 left in the farmland fund and
$1,120,843.04 in the open space fund.
The committee then discussed the Baxter property (Fort Corchaug).
The Town Board had authorized $1,000,000 of the open space funds
and the County was putting up $2,000,000 for the purchase of Fort
Corchaug. However, this deal never came to be. Ruth Oliva suggested
that since the County will not be involved with Robins Island, perhaps
they would go in with the Town for the purchase of Fort Corchaug.
Gerry Dennehy displayed the large map showing the properties on which
the development rights were sold to both the Town and County.
The committee discussed the property offered to the Town by Mr. &
Mrs. Alfano. Bud Cybulski will check out the property and speak to
the Alfanos.
The committee also reviewed the property offered by James Bitses. At
the present time there is no interest in this parcel.
The recent purchase of Robins Island was discussed. The owner is
talking about permanent conservation of the island.
Ruth Oliva will submit a letter of resignation from the committee and
ask the Town Board to advertise for another member for the committee.

With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at
9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Wilkins, Secretary
