HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/18/2010 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of October 18, 2010 Present: Sara Maaiki, Lauren Salmiery, Jeffrey Standish, Tom Rabbitt, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Elaine White, Louise Hug, Diane Mollica, Barbara Sheryll, Karen McLaughlin, Officer William Brewer, Councilman Vincent Orlando and Phillip Beltz. Special guest speaker: Crystal Anderson of the Forever Young Foundation. th Review of September 20 Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: ?? Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Update-Phillip reported that the YAC is proceeding with planning activities for 2010 and 2011. ?? Fundraising-Jeffrey will develop some ideas for a spring (concert/possible dance). ?? Resource Directory: No report. Anti-Bias Education Day Initiative: Sara and Lauren reported that the workshop was very successful and specifically the speaker Werner Reich was very helpful in making the training relevant to understanding bias today. At the next meeting schools will discuss their efforts to replicate the message of future training initiatives to other students at their schools. Bullying: School Initiatives: Due to increased bullying throughout schools, there was a discussion of what schools are doing to address the problem. Tom and Elaine reported that their respective schools integrate respect and tolerance within all program content and they provide a proactive presence to address the issue. Board discussed possibility of developing workshop “What is Bullying?” that could include resources, partner with PTAs, request schools mandate parental attendance, etc. To be incorporated to 2011 Goals & Objectives. School Recycling Initiative: Anne will report next month. Set Meeting Date to Plan Workshop “Alcohol and Other Drugs”: Tabled. Developing Goals and Objectives for 2011: Tabled. Community Service Documentation: Phillip provided a form he developed. Guest Speaker: Crystal Anderson-Forever Young Foundation: Guest Speaker November Meeting: Cindy Smith of the Family Service League will attend the November meeting—may be an opportunity for schools to avail of their services on-site as well as speak to the needs of the youth community at large. Distribution: East End Gang Awareness Committee, Southold High School Forum and Suicide Prevention Symposium –Louise announced SC Legislative hearing on opiate use.
