HomeMy WebLinkAboutBaumann, Kelli J - Farm Animals, Glenn RdAugust 31, 2010 Dear Supervisor Russell, I apologize for taking time out of your busy schedule, but I have an issue that needs to be addressed and am looking for answers. At present time, I understand there are no roles or town codes regarding farm animals on personal property. I will describe the situation I have had to deal with and hope you can offer some assistance or suggestions in the matter. I live on Grissom Lane and the far rear comer of my property meets the back yard of a residence on Glenn Road. Without our permission~ the family has chosen to use our fence as a part of their cage to enclose several chickens and a rooster. It is an open cage made of chicken wire and does not have any shelter for them to be housed in at night. We have learned to cope with the strong odor, rodents, and incessant clucking and crowing noises during the daytime. However, this has become an issue during the night time. Our family, which consists of three children ten years old and younger, have been woken up every night due to the rooster crowing, and more recently by the clucking of the chickens. On any given night, we will be woken up SEVERAL times ranging from 1:00am until 6:00am. The noise will continue for a few minute, stop, then start up again. Once my children are awake, it is difficult getting them back to sleep again. Back in June, my husband tried to address the situation with the owners, but he was met with hostility, threats and was told to "get used to it." At our wits end, my husband has also gone to the Police Station to discuss the matter. He was told to call in the event as it occurs as a disturbance of the peace. To our knowledge, when we have called in, a police car will drive by, not hear anything and leave. We have given up making these calls and are feeling defeated at this point. It is my wish that the Police at least visit this residence, talk to the owners to confirm there is a rooster and chickens and try to resolve this matter. As another school year starts, I am concerned for my children and the lack of sleep we are all getting. This is not a sporadic event, but something that occurs every single night. We are short of solutions and answers and are hoping you can offer assistance in this matter. I am hoping this is an issue that can be brought up and be included in the town code and noise ordinance laws. Any assistance or suggestions that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I am thankful for your time. Sincerely, Kelli J. Baumann 480 Grissom Lane Southold, NY 11971 kbaumann5 ~optimum.net 765-2457 i] ¢ 8EP - 2 20]0
