HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/19/2008 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of May 19, 2008 Present: Liza Coppola, Jim Gorman, Diane Mollica, Sara Maaiki, Jeanine Warns, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barry Miller, Barbara Sheryll, Jeff Standish, Elaine White, Jessica Benedicto, Tom Rabbitt & Phillip Beltz. Introductions: Review of April 28th Minutes: Approved. Report of Youth Outreach Committee: Barbara reported that the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) continues to meet monthly. YAC provided meaningful feedback regarding the survey. Approximately 10 youth participated in the Town Clean-Up initiative at Town Beach in Southold. Review of Term Limits: Phillip distributed Youth Bureau Board term limits (one and two year terms) indicating that they were arbitrarily assigned and Board members will be notified when their term expires and they will have an opportunity to renew. Revised Survey: The survey was revised based on comments from last month and YAC members also made additional changes to the youth survey. Priority for Subcommittees: Phillip informed the group that the following items are interrelated and are priority action items for the Board to undertake: Surveys of youth and adults), focus groups of youth and adults, development of resource directory and the scheduling of events and activities for the summer. Surveys: Southold High School completed their surveys, Mattituck to begin on May ?? thnd 20 and Greenport on May 22. Phillip will modify the adult survey to indicate completion by Southold residents, PO Box address for mailing and announcement of date/time/place for focus group. Focus Groups: YAC will also spearhead focus groups with youth. A focus group with ?? adults will be scheduled in mid-June at the Town Hall meeting room. Venues to solicit responses to the adult survey are as follows: Town website, Channel 22 and advertisement in Suffolk Times (Phillip), Libraries (Bonnie Mazaferro), Columns in Suffolk Times (Barbara), Recreation email list (Phillip to inform Ken Reeves), PTA (Elaine, Tom and Irene) and School websites (Jessica, Tom and Barbara to inform Andrea). Other suggestions made were to target civic and church groups. Resource Directory: Irene and committee members will meet in the near future and ?? Jeanine will provide a copy of Family Service League’s directory. Directory will be 1 welcoming and informal and focus on services and activities provided to youth on the North Fork. Directory will continue to evolve as additional information is garnered. Events & Activities: Liza volunteered to chair. The following concept was developed ?? and Barbara will share with the YAC for their feedback and suggestions: Youth Bureau will sponsor an end of school year social event on a Saturday afternoon that could include tournament activities, food (BBQ), recreational activities and music (band) to be at Recreation Center and Peconic School. Date would be end of June or early July. Suggestion for June Speaker: An email from East End Film Project was distributed regarding their upcoming film making classes for youth and third annual film festival. It was agreed to invite them to the next meeting to be a guest speaker. Breakout to Subcommittees: Selection of Chairs/Co-Chairs and development of Goals and Objectives—tabled for future meeting due to many absences of Board members. Handout: Newsday LI Business. Other: Tom reported that North Fork schools are attempting to develop internships and summer jobs for youth.
