HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/31/2008 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of March 31, 2008 Present: James Gorman, Liza Coppola, Sara Maaiki, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jeanine Warns, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, David Conroy, Mikey Fouchet, Nick Piacente (for Barry Miller), Louise Hug, Barbara Sheryll, Karen McLaughlin, Tom Hudock, Elaine White, Jessica Benedicto, William Brewer, Jeffery Standish, Tom Rabbitt, Councilman Vincent Orlando, Supervisor Scott Russell & Phillip Beltz. Youth Bureau Introduction and Mission: Brief discussion of how the Youth Bureau was conceived in the spring of 2006 and evolved to date. Mission statement articulated. Youth Bureau Organization Chart: Handout provided detail of reporting requirements. Youth Bureau Tasks 2008: Tasks to be accomplished per 2008 report to Suffolk County below: ?? Board members join proposed subcommittees: 1) Youth Representation 2) Events and Activities 3) Surveys and Focus Groups 4) Resource Directory 5)Needs Assessment and 6)Strategic Plan ?? Create Surveys and Distribute—what do youth want and need? ?? Conduct Focus Groups-talk to youth to elicit more details ?? Create Resource Directory-what programs and services exist to serve/help youth ?? Disseminate Surveys to the Community-post on Town’s website ?? Develop Needs Assessment-what is needed to complement existing resources and services to benefit youth ?? Write a Strategic Plan with realistic goals and objectives with proposed timeframes. Strategic Plan would provide analysis of what exists and what is needed in the future to promote positive youth development. ?? Meet with Town Board to discuss proposed strategic plan. ?? Town Board adopts strategic plan. Implementation of the strategic plan is major focus of Youth Bureau Board for 2009 and beyond. Town-wide Clean-up-Supervisor Russell: Supervisor Russell will host a kick-off organizational th meeting on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room to discuss a Town-wide rdth clean up scheduled to begin Saturday, May 3 through May 17. Speakers Bureau: Suggestion for speakers to briefly discuss services they provide to youth at the beginning or end of meetings. Barbara Sheryll suggested drug-free coalition in Riverhead and it was agreed that Board members will submit names in writing with brief description of speakers and proposed topics. Selection will be made upon submission of proposed speakers. Email Distribution List: Completed and will be provided at the next meeting. “Homework Assignment” - Review of Survey and Selection of Subcommittee: Board members are to review handout of proposed youth development survey as well as select a subcommittee(s) that they wish to participate in the future. Meeting Dates and Times: Fourth Mondays of the month (excluding holidays) at 6:00 p.m. at the Human Resource Center in Mattituck.
