Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of December 14, 2009
Present:
Lauren Salmiery, Tom Rabbit, Jeff Standish, Tom Hudock, William Brewer,
Jessica Benedicto, Councilman Vincent Orlando, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz.
Review of November 9th Minutes:
Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
??
Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Phillip reported YAC members recently provided
community service projects for seniors: leaf raking and making holiday cards/cookies
for San Simeon residents. Tom suggested that next year YAC partner with Leo,
ROTC, etc. for leaf raking as it was laborious.

Internships and Employment-Phillip reported that the development of internships with
local businesses may dovetail with the Business Advisory’s Job Shadow day
scheduled on Friday, April 16th. Tom stated that Greenport will feature a Career
Day in 2010 to highlight career opportunities for youth.

Fundraising-Jeff suggested that his son’s band “Breathing East” would be happy to
host/sponsor a concert to benefit the Youth Bureau. Jessica will check the schedule
of Southold High School auditorium for available dates in late January or early
February. This could also provide a venue for other local bands to perform in
advance of the concert.
Updates:

Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: Preliminary survey to measure “perceptions of
difference” should be available for review by late December.

Substance Abuse Prevention/Intervention Presentation: Subcommittee continues to
develop future workshop in the Spring—content will be tailored to parents and youth.

New York Islanders: Recreation Center bulletin has noticed January 18 event—

deadline for registration is December 23, need to fill the bus.
Student Lifeline:
??
Due to lack of attendance, discussion deferred to next meeting.
Tom reported that Greenport utilizes similar service and he will report at the next
meeting their utilization and successes.
Dr. Dewey Presentation:
Phillip reported that a sizable crowd attended however it did not
discuss reasons kids turn to drugs and alcohol.
Youth Bureau Outreach Materials:
A new one page handout has been developed.
Councilman Ruland suggested that 2009 YB report provide measurable outcomes.
Peconic Land Trust Advertisement:
YB Global Youth Service Day at Charnews farm
featured in ad of their year’s accomplishments and activities.
Funding Request for YAC Environmental Activities:
Phillip submitted a funding query to
Captain Planet Foundation to support YAC environmental suggestions.
Next Meeting Date:
Monday, January 11th at 5:30 p.m. at HRC.
