Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of November 09, 2009
Present: Bonnie Mazzaferro, Barry Miller, Elaine White, Sara Maaiki, Tom Hudock
William Brewer, Louise Hug, Diane Mollica, Andrea Nydegger, Barbara Sheryll, Anne
Davey, Jim Gorman, Liza Coppola, Karen McLaughlin, Jeff Standish and Phillip Beltz.
Review of October 19th Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:

Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Barbara reported YAC members are learning
resume development and working on community service projects this year.
??
Internships and Employment-Phillip reported that he is awaiting call from Kathy
Williams of Southold High School regarding the development of internships
throughout the Town with local businesses.
Updates:
??
Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: Doctoral student has yet to present
preliminary survey to measure “perceptions of difference”.
??
Substance Abuse Prevention/Intervention/Social Host Law Presentation:
Subcommittee of Officers Brewer and Hudock, Diane Mollica, Anne Davey,
Liza Coppola, Jim Gorman and Phillip Beltz met to further develop concept for
future workshop in the Spring.
??
New York Islanders: Phillip will confirm with Ken Reeves of Recreation to
book “Southold Town Youth Appreciation Day outing on Martin Luther King Jr.
day, Monday, January 18 at 2 p.m. that will include bus ride.
??
National Teen Driving Safety Workshop: few attendees but very informative.
Promoting Visibility of the Youth Bureau/Youth Advisory Council:
??
Discussion of utilizing Facebook—Barbara queried if site should be open or
closed and Phillip indicated that Town policy prohibits site. Anne suggested
and all agreed that YB utilize Facebook “fan page” to advertise events.
Student Lifeline: Discussion tabled to next meeting as it could be perceived as
“enabling poor decisions” or “keeping kids alive”.
The Law Squad Video: Barbara requested board view the website link.
Date Rape: Liza presented importance of discussion of this topic in light of the
recent events in the media. YB could feature a future workshop on the subject.
Peconic Lane Community Center: Town is gathering ideas from the community
regarding use of former school, plausible use for youth activities.
Presentation: Marilee Scheer of NF Community Theater “Youth on Stage”.
Distribution: Newsday 10.29.09.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, December 14th at 5:30 p.m. at HRC.
