Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of October 19, 2009
Present: Elaine White, Sara Maaiki, Officer Tom Hudock, Louise Hug, Diane
Mollica, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Andrea Nydegger, Barbara Sheryll, Tom Rabbitt,
Jessica Benedicto, Anne Davey, Jim Gorman, Karen McLaughlin and Phillip Beltz.
Review of September 14th Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
??
Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Barbara reported that the YAC members are
very energetic to accomplish many goals this year. They have begun
planning activities for the year.

Events- In process of being developed.
??
Internships and Employment-Phillip reported that he and intern Anthony
Losquadro presented to Southold, Mattituck and Greenport Business Advisory
the concept of developing internships throughout the Town with local
businesses.
Updates:
??
Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: School superintendants attended “working
committee” meeting to assist with development of survey to measure
“perceptions of difference”.
??
Substance Abuse Prevention/Intervention/Social Host Law Presentation: A
subcommittee of the following volunteers will work on this topic: Diane Mollica,
Anne Davey, Barbara Sheryll, Jim Gorman and Phillip Beltz. Other volunteers

are welcome! Meeting scheduled for November 9 at 5:00 p.m. at Human
Resource Center.

New York Islanders: Ken Reeves of Recreation has developed a preliminary
trip at a cost of $42 per person (tickets and transportation) tentatively
scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. day, Monday, January 18 at 2 p.m.
Promotional items will be included. Board agreed that YB and YAC should
sponsor in concert with Rec. Ctr.
Promoting Visibility of the Youth Bureau/Youth Advisory Council:

Tom and Sara presented to Greenport PTA.
??
Elaine attended the Southold executive PTA meeting.
??
Anne is writing an article for the Southold newletter.
??
Irene will present to Mattituck PTA.
??
Phillip met with 4EC and will attend their November mtg.
??
In the future, YB and YAC could attend September Back to School Nights.
Also suggested that YAC have opportunities to discuss at assemblies.
National Teen Driving Safety Week: Workshop promoting teen driving safety on

October 22.
Red Ribbon Week: Tom reported that Greenport’s “Students Against Destructive
Decisions” (SADD) is supporting Red Ribbon Week through offering free cab rides to

students of Greenport who need rides because those they are driving with made bad
decisions (e.g. drinking).
Student Lifeline: Suffolk County Youth Bureau provided information of service that
similar to above enables communities to combat hazards of driving intoxicated,
vehicle breakdowns, accidents, bad dates, etc.. Youth Bureaus can have Student
Lifeline develop cab rides that are paid through sponsorships from the local business
community who pay for ads. Discussion tabled until next meeting.
One Voice Movement: Barbara provided information on Suffolk Y program (11/5).
Future Presentations: Irene suggested North Fork Community Theater “Youth on
Stage”, agreed by the board to present November meeting.
Presentation of Human Understanding and Growth Seminars: Kym Laube
provided an overview of their efforts to address substance abuse via prevention
services. She will assist with the upcoming workshop and primarily feature “Alcohol:
No Minor Problem”.
Distribution: New York Times and Newsday articles about heroin use.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, November 9th at 5:30 p.m. at the Human Resource
Ctr.
