HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/14/2009 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of September 14, 2009 Present: Elaine White, Sara Maaiki, Officer William Brewer, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Louise Hug, Diane Mollica, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barbara Sheryll, Tom Rabbitt, Jeffrey Standish, Lauren Salmiery, Jessica Benedicto, Councilman Vincent Orlando and Phillip Beltz. Review of August 10th Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: ?? Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Barbara and Phillip interviewed ten new YAC members who will bring a great deal of talent and energy to the group. ?? Events- Family Movie Nite was a major success with many new participants, over 75 people attended, mostly families with young children. ?? Internships and Employment-The Town would like to sponsor employment again next summer through Suffolk County’s Summer Works program. Intern, Anthony Losquadro, authored a program evaluation. Updates: th ?? Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: A meeting is scheduled for September 24 of the “working committee” to discuss developing a survey to measure “perceptions of difference”. In addition, through support from the Town the ABTF submitted a grant to the Long Island Community Foundation to fund the development and dissemination of the survey. ?? Social Host Law Presentation: Officer Brewer and Phillip met to discuss a future presentation and believe that focusing solely on the responsibility of parents with underage drinking is too limited and they proposed a more comprehensive program that would include prevention and resources. The Board was in favor of enhancing the workshop, preliminary suggestions include involvement of Cornell Cooperative and HUGS, utilization of OASIS data from Mattituck and Southold schools, feature local resources CTC, NFA, SADD, DARE, HealthSmart. Bonnie volunteered to develop a bibliography. Promoting Visibility of the Youth Bureau/Youth Advisory Council: See below: ?? Distribution of Resource Directories and accomplishments to schools, PTAs, etc. ?? Banners-Town of Southold Youth Bureau ?? Twitter and Facebook ?? Suffolk Times ads and letter to the editor, story re Fishers Island “exchange” program ?? Attend meetings of PTA, 4EC, etc. ?? School newspapers, PSA ?? Presence at local activities (festivals, etc.) National Teen Driving Safety Week: Distribution of flyer announcing campaign to designate October 18-24, 2009 to promote teen driving safety. Due to limited time, it was suggested that Phillip contact for possible YB sponsorship, if plausible. New York Islanders: Phillip met with the sales representative of the Islanders who is trying to develop business “out east”. He would be willing to create incentives and possibly involve the players if there is interest. Board concurred that we should try to take advantage of this and involve YAC. Future Presentations: Human Understanding and Growth Seminars (HUGS) will present at the next meeting. Presentation of the North Fork United Schools: Lynne Krauza provided an overview of their efforts to share services and reduce taxes for six school districts (Oysterponds to Shoreham-Wading River) without compromising the quality of education.
