Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of August 10, 2009
Present: Liza Coppola, James Gorman, Karen McLaughlin, Elaine White, Barry
Miller, Tom Rabbitt, Councilman Vincent Orlando and Phillip Beltz.
Review of July 13th Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
??
Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Phillip reiterated that several YAC members are
meeting to assist with planning summer activities. He and Barbara will
interview prospective YAC applicants in August.
??
Events- Phillip reported that the evening workshop on internet safety was
poorly attended although Detective Forrestal did an excellent job. The
Summer Jam had about 50 participants representing many new faces
(summer residents, new kids, etc.) yet very few YAC attended. If they had
attended and each brought one or two friends, there would have been 100
th
attendees. He reminded everyone of Family Movie Nite on August 14 at
Tasker Park. There was significant discussion regarding promoting visibility of
the Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Council such as Councilman Orlando’s
suggestion to obtain a booth at the Maritime Festival. It was suggested to
table the discussion as an agenda item next meeting (time, costs, etc.).
??
Internships and Employment-Tom reported that 5 students are working
through Suffolk County’s Summer Works program and one student intern with
Phillip.
Updates:
??
Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: Phillip met with the chair of the Anti-Bias
Taskforce and a doctoral student to discuss developing a survey to measure
“perceptions of difference”. This was well received by superintendents and a
working committee will be selected to participate, including Youth Bureau
board members.
Meeting with the Town Board: Phillip met with the Town Board to enlist support
regarding Youth Bureau activities and distributed the Resource Directory that was
well-received. Councilman Krupski suggested the board consider a nominal charge
to future events although funding dictates may prohibit charging for events.
Meeting with Fishers Island Superintendent: Barbara and Tom joined Phillip and
student intern Anthony Losquadro in meeting with Charlie Meyers, newly hired
Superintendent for Fishers Island School District at the annual Fishers Island
meeting. This successful meeting provided several future collaborations such as
designation of FI Youth Advisory Council members and YAC immersion programs
and training with mainland students visiting FI, vice versa and meeting in New
London (FI Ferry District conference room). Also discussed was possibility of
webcam meetings. Mr. Meyers stated he would like to participate with the student
survey being developed by Anti Bias Taskforce.
1
Meeting with Mercy-McGann: Diane Mollica arranged a meeting with Dr.
Cheeseman that Phillip attended with a purpose to promote an understanding of
Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Council activities. He agreed to pursue with
several representatives when school resumes in September. Minimally it was
requested that they designate YAC members.
Coordinating with PTA, SEPTA and other School Organizations: Tom and
Barbara discussed outreach strategies to involve PTAs and other organizations
(Southold Mothers Club) with YB activities to improve attendance. Elaine remarked
that Southold PTA is reluctant to promote their events so it may not be easy to
accomplish. It was agreed that this is part of community outreach to be discussed at
the next meeting. Phillip will request to be invited to 4EC meetings.
Parenting Workshop: Social Host Law: In absence of the Police Department,
Phillip will speak with Captain Flatley, Officers Brewer and Hudock to develop a
workshop with speakers, as it is a Police function. Rather than partner with other
agencies, it was agreed that the Youth Bureau and Police should sponsor the event.
Future Presentations: Lynne Krauza of North Fork United Schools will present at
the September meeting.
Presentation Weinig Foundation: Mary Jo Weinig and Joe Cortale of Floyd
Memorial Library presented information regarding the foundation’s work in Florida
and the North Fork, in particular the “Read a Recipe for Literacy” program. Several
ideas and suggestions were provided to enhance the program such as the Town’s
recreation center sponsoring classes, community gardening, YAC mentors, etc.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, September 14th at 5:30 p.m. at the Human Resource
Center.
Respectfully Submitted,
Phillip Beltz
