HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/11/2009 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of May 11, 2009 Present: Diego Albizures, Barry Miller, Liza Coppola, James Gorman, Karen McLaughlin, Tom Rabbitt, Diane Mollica, Elaine White, Officer William Brewer, Jeffrey Standish, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jessica Benedicto, Andrea Nydegger, Stephen Klipp, Louise Hug, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barbara Sheryll and Phillip Beltz. Review of April 20th Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: ?? Youth Advisory Council (YAC)-Barbara reported that the YAC will host a recognition celebration for graduating seniors. ?? Events- Liza and Barbara reported seven acts are scheduled for the GMS GOT TALENT show. The board was asked to assist with judging. ?? Resource Directory-Irene stated document will be ready to go to press. Jim reported the Mattituck Presbyterian Church would not be able to produce it. ?? Internships and Employment-Tom reported that Southold government internships and Suffolk County employment opportunities are being coordinated through the Greenport, Mattituck and Southold Business Advisory Council. Diane requested involvement with Mercy McGann and Phillip will send her information. st ?? Fundraising: The Mattituck Lions will sponsor a golf outing on July 1 at Islands End golf course with proceeds benefitting the Youth Bureau. Jeff is spearheading this event and the committee will work to develop sponsors for prizes and donations. Updates: ?? Global Youth Service Day: Very successful event at Charnews farm with over 30 youth participating. You Tube video highlights the accomplishments of the day. ?? New York State Youth Bureau Funding: Town will receive funding but unclear how much. ?? Development of Goals and Objectives 2009: The Town Board has requested that committees develop mission statements and goals and objectives for 2009—Phillip submitted on behalf of the Youth Bureau. th ?? Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership: A Town Board proclamation will be issued on May 19 st recognizing May 21 as “Anti-Bias Education Day” in the Town with mandatory training for Town staff and an evening public discussion. Liza indicated that Marcelo Lucero’s parents could be potential speakers. ?? Graffiti Removal-Officer Brewer reported that he will work with ROTC and YAC to remove rd graffiti on Saturday, May 23. ?? Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) program: Town Board has tentatively supported the Recreation Center offering this program for the summer. Parenting Workshops (social networking sites, etc.): The Board suggested a presentation by Suffolk County detective Rory Forrestal for a summer evening workshop for parents and youth. Philip will contact him regarding availability and workshop content. Youth Build Long Island: Flyer from United Way program distributed. Future Presentations: The Weinig Foundation and North Fork Alliance agreed to present their programs to the Board at future meetings.
