HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/09/2009 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of March 09, 2009 Present: Barry Miller, Liza Coppola, Karen McLaughlin, Tom Rabbitt, Jeanine Warns, Elaine White, Jeff Standish, Jim Gorman, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jessica Benedicto, Nick Piacente, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barbara Sheryll, Councilman Vincent Orlando, Councilman William Ruland, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz. Also present from the Anti-Bias Taskforce Carolyn Peabody, Cindy Smith and Merle Levine. Review of February 2nd Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: ?? Youth Outreach and Representation-Phillip reported that the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will th paint the stage mural at the Recreation Center on March 28 to be coordinated by Jeff Standish and Jim Gorman. th ?? Events- Barbara reported on the upcoming GMS GOT TALENT show scheduled for May 16 at Southold’s High School’s auditorium with auditions at the Recreation Center. Jim will try to get a performance slot for winters of the talent show at the Strawberry Festival as well as a booth for the YB/YAC. ?? Resource Directory-Irene stated that her committee will have a final draft in the near future. The costs for publishing will be approximately $1000. Due to funding restraints, Phillip stated that the Town would need to reproduce with minimal costs. Jim volunteered to approach the Mattituck Presbyterian Church to see if they could produce at cost. ?? Internships and Employment-Phillip is developing high school internships within the Town of Southold government with Department heads. He and Tom will coordinate with schools. th ?? Fundraising: Jeff will meet with the committee on March 19 to brainstorm ideas. Subcommittee Membership : A list was circulated to finalize subcommittee participation. Community Service Activity-Global Youth Service Day: Phillip met with the Peconic Land Trust, the Youth Bureau will partner with them to sponsor a land stewardship activity for local youth service groups. New York State Youth Bureau Funding: The state has not made any budgetary commitments, will not know until budget passes. Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership to Address Youth Hate Crimes: Taskforce members expressed the need of the Town and schools to assume a proactive approach to mitigate bias acts, in particular by youth. Consensus reached by board members that the Town and in particular the Youth Bureau should work in concert with the Anti-Bias Taskforce to address the problem and foster an environment of inclusion throughout the Town. The Supervisor noted that the declining economy may likely cause further targeting and scapegoating of minorities. Future steps will be taken, including a meeting with school superintendents that will include the Youth Bureau and Anti-Bias Taskforce members. Development of Goals and Objectives for 2009: Deferred. Term Expiration/Renewals: Board members whose terms will expire have requested reappointment by the Town Board. Location of Future Meetings: Phillip attempted to book the Recreation Center but they are booked on Mondays and Town Hall is booked due to Planning Board meetings so we will stay in Mattituck. th Next Meeting Date: Monday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Human Resource Center.
