HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/12/2009 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of February 02, 2009 Present: Officer William Brewer, Tom Rabbitt, Jeanine Warns, Louise Hug, Elaine White, Jim Gorman, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jessica Benedicto, Lauren Salmiery, Nick Piacente, Diane Mollica, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Councilman William Ruland, Karen McLaughlin and Phillip Beltz. Review of January 5th Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: ?? Youth Outreach and Representation-In the absence of Barbara Sheryll, Phillip reported that the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is working on several initiatives: talent show, fashion show, Global Youth Service day to name a few. ?? Events- Nothing to report. ?? Resource Directory- With Irene not present; Phillip reported that a first draft will be reviewed by the subcommittee after the meeting. ?? Internships and Employment-Tom Rabbit reported that he and Phillip attended a meeting with school representatives and the Youth Bureau will support their efforts, including the development of high school internships within the Town of Southold government, see below. ?? Fundraising: No report in the absence of Jeff Standish. Subcommittee Membership : A list was circulated to determine subcommittee participation. Global Youth Service Day: Phillip reported that a community activity will be developed for Global Youth Service Day (April 24-26), possibly in partnership with other community service groups. Recreation Center Renovation Update: Phillip reported that the interior renovation is almost complete. Nick stated the YAC will further discuss plans for painting the mural at tonight’s meeting. Development of Goals and Objectives for 2009: Phillip reported that subcommittees should st formulate goals and objectives no later than March 31. Subcommittees should be prepared to meet after the next meeting date or in advance to develop items they wish to achieve for 2009. This will be discussed at the April meeting. Town of Southold High School Internship Opportunities: Phillip reported that he will meet with Department Heads to foster summer internship opportunities. OCFS Report: Phillip submitted an Office for Children and Family Services Youth Bureau program application and narrative to Suffolk County Youth Bureau articulating successes of 2008 and anticipated outcomes for 2009. Several Board members requested copies of the report. New York State Youth Bureau Funding: Phillip reported that the NY State budget, as proposed, has been significantly cut and counties will be asked to comingle intervention and prevention services through competitive block grant funding. Legislator Romaine contacted him to voice his support of Youth Bureau funding for the North Fork. Term Expiration/Renewals: Phillip informed members whose terms will expire in March 31, 2009. He will forward an email requesting members to reply if they wish to remain on the Board and serve a two year term.
