Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of May 10, 2010
Present:
Lauren Salmiery, Sara Maaiki, Tom Rabbitt, Diane Mollica, Jeffrey Standish, Jim Gorman, Elaine
White, Officer Bill Brewer and Phillip Beltz.

Review of April 12 Minutes:
Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
??
Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and Recruitment-Review of activities scheduled
throughout the year. In addition YAC will recruit additional members at their
respective schools. Diane requested that YAC activities be sent to YB.
??
Internships and Employment-Suffolk County Dept. of Labor met with Phillip for
preliminary discussion of summer employment opportunities provided it is funded.
Phillip met with teacher in Mattituck requesting employment/internships for students
with special needs. Tom will also have several students from Greenport. Jeff has
someone and will verify if the family meets income requirements. Anne Davey will
work with Phillip as an intern this summer. Jeff stated that the collegiate baseball
league has several paid internships for students.

Fundraising-Jeff is exploring two future events: Brady Rhymer concert for pre-teens
as well as home run derby.

Anti-Bias Taskforce and School Administrators Survey: YAC pilot survey was not
approved by Institutional Review Board of Stony Brook.

Teen Depression and Suicide Prevention Workshop- Reminder of workshop by the

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention scheduled for Tuesday, May 11.
Youth Advisory Council Activities:
Discussion of Global Youth Service Day and
circulation of photo in Suffolk Times.
Tour of Greenport High School:
Provided by Tom and Sara Maaiki.

Next Meeting Date:
Monday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Human Resource Ctr.

Job Shadow Day: Officer Brewer reported that 8 students participated at the Police
Dept. Lauren stated that she and several students went to Plum Island lab.

Anti-Bias Education Day: Tom reported that YB consider hosting another day/event
that could include a workshop for “training student leaders”. Superintendent
Comanda suggested the month of October. Everyone agreed that this is an excellent
idea. Will be placed on the agenda for discussion in June.

Strawberry Festival: Jim reported that five finalists were selected for the Strawberry
Festival queen competition (kudos to Lauren Salmiery!)
