Review of June 23rd Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
· Youth Outreach and Representation-Barbara reported that the Youth Advisory Council
took a proactive role in planning the Summer Jam (development of posters,
decorations, and speak-out). The active membership of YAC is approximately 20
youth. A leadership program is being considered. Other future activities for
consideration by YAC: development of Youth Bureau website, volunteerism in honor
of Dr. Martin Luther King day in January.
· Events- "Summer Jam" was successful with about 50 youth participating, all appeared
to have a very good time. Irene brought photos from the event that she shared with the
Board on her computer. There is a surplus of food that will be utilized for a future
event in the fall. Karen suggested hosting an intergenerational BBQ with seniors and
youth at the Human Resource Center - informal activity in September with hotdogs
(utilize some of the remaining food inventory) music and Wii bowling, etc.
· Surveys-Phillip reported that while we have an enormous response from youth, only 50
adults responded (responses were distributed). In an effort to increase responses, he
will ask Bonnie Mazzaferro to work with libraries to solicit responses, Barbara will write
an article in her column and Irene will target Boy Scouts, PTA. Also, Youth Bureau
Board members should complete surveys. Youth Bureau Board will host an
informational meeting with the area schools (including Mercy-McGann) at the
September meeting. Phillip will have a preliminary survey analysis available for review
at the August meeting.
· Resource Directory-Irene to convene meeting after Board meeting.
Other: Councilman Orlando reported on the Peconic School and Recreation Center campus
meeting and plans for future use. Liza requested that the Youth Bureau Board and Youth
Advisory Council are consulted to get their feedback. He will have both groups invited to their
next meeting to garner their feedback.
Future Presentations: Suggestions were made for: Richard Hillary who is responsible for
youth programs, Nancy Olsen-Harbich, parenting instructor at Cornell Cooperative Extension
and Larry Weiss, Family Service League.
Contact Distribution List: Email and emergency telephone # list developed.
