Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board
Minutes of September 22, 2008
Present: Jessica Benedicto, Elaine White, Tom Rabbitt, Bonnie Mazzaferro, William Brewer,
Louise Hugg, Jim Gorman, Lauren Salmiery, Barbara Sheryll, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Jeanine
Warns, Councilman Al Krupski, Jr., Councilman Vincent Orlando, Jack Jerdan, Karen McLaughlin and
Phillip Beltz.
Review of August 25th Minutes: Approved.
Report of Subcommittees:
· Youth Outreach and Representation-Barbara reported that the Youth Advisory Council
membership is being reviewed and new members will be sought to fill vacancies as
needed by school district. Barbara and Phillip will interview applicants. Barbara also
reported that YAC will support the Recreation Center's "Open Mic Night" sessions.
Jim provided a written report from Liza on the first Open Mic night that was attended
by approximately 15 youth-need to promote early and often.
· Events- An Intergenerational BBQ is planned for the fall, details to follow.
· Resource Directory-Irene provided a comprehensive report to the Board that
includes their efforts to collect information that can be submitted via website or by mail.
Board members should give Irene feedback ASAP (it21@cornell.edu). Councilman
Krupski suggested dovetailing Resource Directory information with the Recreation
Center mailing.
Enhancing Youth Bureau Visibility in the Community: Phillip stated that many people are
unaware of the Town's Youth Bureau and that everyone can assist in enhancing the Youth
Bureau's profile in the community.
Future Presentations: Phillip reported that he and Irene met with Nancy Olsen-Harbich,
parenting instructor at Cornell Cooperative Extension to discuss parenting education
workshops to be hosted by the Youth Bureau at Town Hall. Board members selected two
workshop topics "spoiled rotten" and "family table". Phillip will contact Cornell to schedule.
Suffolk County Youth Bureau Directors Meeting: Phillip telephoned the county Youth
Bureau to submit an article about Southold's Youth Bureau and was informed "1 was unaware
Southold had a YB.' He now is in the "information loop" with multiple emails and invitations,
including monthly meetings by county YB director, Lou Medina. County is warning providers
that the state is seriously trimming budgets and be prepared to have budget cuts.
Survey Results/Press Release: When YAC membership is complete, information on the
YAC and results of surveys will be provided for school newspapers and Town website
Youth Website: Three YAC members and Philip will work with Town's Information
Technology director to create a Youth website page that will include YB information.
Other: Councilman Orlando reported that Town's insurance policy would not insure skate
board parks not on Town property.
Next Meeting Date: October 27th at 5:30 p.m.
