HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/05/2009Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of January 05, 2009 Present: Officer Tom Hudock, Tom Rabbitt, Jeanine Warns, Louise Hug, Elaine White, Barry Miller, Jim Gorman, Sara Maaiki, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jessica Benedicto, Jeffrey Standish, Lauren Salmiery, Nick Piacente, Diane Mollica, Barbara Sheryll, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Councilman Vincent Orlando, Karen McLaughlin and Phillip Beltz. Review of November 24th Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: · Youth Outreach and Representation-Barbara reported that the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) enjoyed the holiday party; approximately 15 youth participated in providing holiday gifts to CAST and making cards and baking cookies for San Simeon residents. · Events- Jim reported that the most recent "Open Mic Night" was cancelled due !o snow. Barbara stated that it will be revamped into a "talent showcase" featuring a variety of acts, A contest will be held allowing kids to be judged for best performance. Details to be further developed through the YAC. · Resource Directory-Irene reported that support staff of the supervisor's office will assist in producing the directory. · Internships and Employment-Tom Rabbit reported that he and Phillip will attend a meeting with school representatives later in the month. The Youth Bureau's role will be to facilitate with Chambers of Commerce and Town government, · Fundraising: Jeff reported that he had a preliminary conversation with Islands End about the possibility of a golf outing on behalf of the Youth Bureau. Lauren Salmiery stated that she would like to work with the YAC to host a fashion show for potential fundraising Jeff stated that Councilman Orlando would like to work with him on fundraising and anyone else who is interested should let him know, · Subcommittee participation: A list will be circulated to update subcommittee representation as some people are not sure what they volunteered to assist with while some others have changed committees. Phillip will provide at the next meeting, Global Youth Service Day: Barbara and Phillip reported that rather than participate in a community activity in honor of Dr. Martin Luther the YAC will perform community service activities for Global Youth Service Day (April 24-26). Update on Recreation Center Meetin.q: A meeting was held of the Parks and Recreation committee regarding youth feedback for renovations of the Rec, Ctr. Nick Piacente attended the meeting and will coordinate with YAC the proposed design and creation of a mural on the walls of the stage In addition, Nick will spearhead the development of a list of games and activities to be purchased for the facility. Development of Goals and Obiectives for 2009: Phillip reported that subcommittee shoul¢ formulate goals and objectives for the New Year. As an example, he used the "Events Subcommittee will utilize funding from Trust and Agency Funds for substance abuse committee to host en event with an appropriate theme. Advocacy-Sustaining New York State Youth Bureau Fundin.q: Phillip advised the Board that while the NY State budget is in flux, there is a possibility that YB funding may be eliminated. He will provide sample letters to send to the Governor, State and County legislators. Conference Notice: Distribution of a flyer from Suffolk Coalition for Parents and Children "What Families Need to Know about the Juvenile Justice System". Other: Karen informed the Board that some Town vehicles were vandalized in the HRC parking lot over the weekend.
