HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/20/2009Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes of April 20, 2009 Present: Sara MaikJi, Liza Coppola, James Gorman, Karen McLaughlin, Tom Rabbitt, Diane Mollica, Elaine White, Officer Thomas Hudock, Officer William Brewer, Jeff Standish, Bonnie Mazzaferro, Jessica Benedicto, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Barbara Sheryll, Councilman William Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Review of March 9th Minutes: Approved. Report of Subcommittees: · Youth Outreach and Representation-Barbara reported that seven Youth Advisory Council (YAC) members assisted in painting the Recreation Center stage mural on March 28th. · Events- Liza and Barbara reported on the upcoming GMS GOT TALENT show scheduled for May 16th at Southold's High School's auditorium. Several acts are confirmed and they need one more judge. Jim confirmed a performance slot for winners at the Strawberry Festival. · Resoume Directory-Irene stated that her committee is finalizing the document. Jim will inquire if the Mattituck Presbyterian Church could produce at cost. * Internships and Employment-Tom reported that Phillip is developing high school internships within the Town of Southold government as well as some employment opportunities through Suffolk County Works program. They will coordinate with schools. · Fundraising: Jeff reported that he and Phillip met with the Mattituck Lions Club who agreed to host a golf outing in which the proceeds will benefit the Youth Bureau. In addition, he confirmed July 1st as the date at Islands End golf course. Review of 2008 and Moving Fo~vard: Phillip, Barbara and Irene met this month to assess the efforts of the Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Council. In moving forward they would like to ensure that youth events are tailored to youth interests with feedback from YAC, allowing sufficient advance time with consideration of transportation. YAC meetings will focus on the development of leadership and life skills with an evaluation component. Suggestions for the Events Subcommittee include: 2"d Annual Summer Jam, Family Nite at the Movies in the park, parenting workshops (social networking sites) and an activity geared towards younger kids (5th-8th grades). Diane suggested workshop "Your Brain on Drugs" and Jessica suggested "cooking contest activity". Anyone with suggestions of events or topics should email Phillip. Community Service Activity - Global Youth Service Day (April 24th): Phillip reported th'at he has successfully engaged the Peconic Land Trust to host a community service event at the Charnews farm in Southold to offer youth land stewardship opportunities to local youth service groups, including YAC. New York State Youth Bureau Funding: No finalized details of the Youth Bureau funding other than it is back in the budget for 2009 at a lesser amount than 2008. Development of Goals and Objectives 2009: Committees were encouraged to meet and develop. Anti-Bias Taskforce Partnership Update: A meeting scheduled with the school district superintendents, Anti-Bias Taskforce and Youth Bureau subcommittee was very productive and will yield a continuing dialogue. Graffiti-Officer Brewer: Officer Brewer has been following up on complaint from a citizen regarding the appearance of graffiti in Town. He reported that he is working with the Police Department in Riverhead and will further efforts on behalf of the Youth Bureau that may include community service projects to eradicate graffiti. Grant Opportunity from Legislator Romaine: Phillip reported that Legislator Romaine provided a $2500 grant opportunity from the Community Support Initiative that he submitted. Presentation: Richard Hillary "Proiect YES": Mr. Hillary returned to report on his scaled down version of Project YES (Youth Environmental Stewardship) as a possible offering of the Recreation Center that is less costly than originally presented.
