HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/17/2007SOUTHOLD TOWN ANT-BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES, DEC. 17, 2007 Attendance: Marjorie Day, Eleanor Lingo, Val Shelby, Michael Simon, Cindy Smith, Tom Wickham and Supervisor Russell Absent: Mike Domino, Jean Le Pre, Merle Levine, Betty Murphy, Carolyn Peabody A Quorum is not present so a discussion is held with no voting taking place. Minutes are read and accepted. The police advisory committee and some ABTF members have begun tO have conversation re: the immigration issues in Southold Town. Scott Russell (Supv) states the police will have further discussion re the ICE raid. The police advisory committee is designed to make the police Dept. more cost effective. Discussion re: housing/rental -- landlord/tenant Tenants in Southold can utilize the small claims court. State building code dictates the # of people who can reside in a dwelling. Overcrowding mainly benefits landlords financially. Scott Russell (Supv) explains that a permit law could be a way to have enforcement of the state building code. It fomes down market rate vs exploitation. Ellie Lingo has a question re: what determines whether or not storefront has to, have bathroom access available to the public? (Michael Simon will look into this) Martin Luther King program is almost ready to be put in flyer form. We are waiting for a bio from the speaker Janice Johnson. Poster contest for black history month is being pursued. So far Oysterponds will get back to Marjorie and Southold is not interested. Marjorie will contact the editor of the Quill at Greenport School To what extent can the town control cooperation with ICE raids? The ABTF decides we want to pursue the issue and spend most of meeting time devising strategy to address the work session of the Town Bd tomorrow. Goal is to draft a resolution which will 1. Require the police to consult with the police commissioner(s) when there will be an ICE RAID. 2. A detailed statement is made as to how to work the idea that pursuit of a person may only done when there is a warrant with a specifically named person and current address.
