SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE JUN 2 2008
Minutes of the May 19, 2008 Board Meeting $outhold Town Clerk
Attendance: Eleanor Lingo, Jean Le Pre, Caroline Peabody, Cindy Smith, Marjorie
Day, Merle Levine
Absent: Val Shelby, Mike Domino, Betty Murphy, Addae Watson
The focus of the meeting was viewing the video, "Who Is Unita Blackwell?"
The screening was provided by Caroline Peabody, and was a gripping,
shocking and moving presentation of the courageous and dedicated
"battle" that Unita Blackwell waged on behalf of the civil rights of
people of color.
We found it so moving that we wanted to share it more broadly in Southold
Town. It only costs $10 to reproduce the video, and we voted to acquire 12
copies, for distributing to the 3 high schools, 4 libaries, and to the churches.
Addae Watson has suggested that we initiate a film series - on Courage and
Action, and have a follow-up on Jails. And that the series could be presented
at the First Universalist Church in Southoid.
Information that Rev. Malcolm Boyd, of the AME Zion Church, had received
threatening letters. Eleanor Ling9 and Marjorie Day will speak with him
to set up a meeting to discuss the issue.
Members were urged to support, the Relay for Life on May 31, and make donations
for the American CanCer ,Society.
Marjorie Day reported on the East End Picnic in Southampton. We will contribute
towards the project and as many of us as possible will attend. We will send
a letter to the churches urging their participation, and the possibility of
providing vans for transportation. We will also ask Mayor Nyee about
the possibility of providing transportation and involving the Village of
Greenport. We need to get out publicity about the event.
Concern about the new requirement that contractors are responsible for assuring
that immigrant workers are legal. Caroline Peabody will write a letter to the
Suffolk Times and to Newsday.
Bias incident involving a fireman needing help in taking the required test. Cindy
Smith researched the issue and explained how he could be considered a
Disability and have someone read the test to him. However, she has had no
Response from the fireman himself, or from the woman who had been his
Advocate.
