SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI -BIAS TASK FORCE
JULY 20, 2009 MINUTES
Present are: Audrey Horton, Jeanne Made Merkel, Peter Bel, Carolyn Peabody, Betty
Murphy, Rev. Nathaniel Heyward, Patricia Fulford
Excused are Marjorie Day and Jean Le Pre
Corrections are made from last months minutes. Peter Bel was at the meeting and a
correction is made to the spelling of his name. Jeanne Marie Merkle was excused. On
~6 the spelling is Edan~ #7 the spelling is Breese not Breeze.
A motion is made and seconded to accept the minutes as corrected.
New members are introduced.
OLD BUSINESS
1. There has been no contact with Michael Simon as of this date. We need an
update of brochure/mission statement to go on website. Michael reports via
telephone that the old brochure has the mission statement which is acceptable.
2. Carolyn suggests having the minutes sooner so that members can attend to their
tasks prior to meeting.
3. Jeanne Made will update our list which will be available for next meeting.
4. Collaborative vigil cannot bo addressed-Edana can you help us out?
NEW BUSINESS
1. Juanita McKinney contacted Merle Re; her concern about 6ta grade graduation in
Mattituck. The only children that participated were eaucasion, and there is
diversity in that class. Carolyn, Eleanor and the Suffolk Human fights
Commission and Juanita strategized to get parents together. The attempt was
successful. Avery diverse group approached the Mattituck school Bd with their
concerns. Recommendations were made on how to help the town and schools to
promote the ABTF. Michael Simon spoke for the ABTF Education Comm. He
schools next meeting will vote to put these principles into practice. The ABTF
will need to be a constant presence.
2. Schools are required by law to advertise openings. Peter Bel suggests the ABTF
submit resumes of qualified candidates.

Carolyn is hoping the assessment (Doctoral candidate) will address the issue of
racism/diversity.
Audrey is hopeful that there will be discussion of more inclusive groups to be offered
Re: nutrition and reading materials.
Nathaniel "Let's Break this Glass Ceiling In Southold Town"
The ABTF and the Youth Bureau have begun the process to work collabomtively to
not allow divisive statements in Southold Town (May 21 ABTF Day).
Patricia would like to see sessions offered to minority students to allow for them to
discuss their expedenee.
Parents of a district can make an impact.
Subcommittee will meet today to discuss future.
3. Shelter Island complaint. 5 black children are targeted and harassed. Human
Rights Commission director met with the family. Her findings include that the
13 yr old is too traumatized to go to school. The I-IRC will continue their
investigation.
ABTF should prevail upon SI school to create their own task force. Jeanne Made and
others will speak with their contacts to promote the idea~
4. There is a new editor of the Suffolk Times. Committee will call to meet.
5. Erase Racism (Nov 16-17 (Manhassett)$ 500. Participants ? Can anyone
contribute to their own cost
6. Mineola> exposing bias in the media.
7. Budget is to be submitted.
8. MLK committee will begin 2010 planning
