MINUTES for SEPTEMBER 21

MINUTES: Read and accepted with no corrections.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
BROCHURE: Audrey Horton will check with Michael Simon re computer
Program used for the brochure.
COLLABORATIVE VIGIL:
Edana checked with Poppy at the Greenport Library - there is no
Program planned for this year.

Sister Margaret reported a vicious beating of a young man in
Riverhead, that knocked out all his teeth.
Southern Poverty I,aw Center renorts more violence and eanes.
What actions can we take?
Mayor Nyce is planning an inclusive meeting on Oct. 19 in Greenport
To deal with issues of bias.
CAST is planning a mentoring program

SCHOOL COMMITTEES:
Pat Fulfort reported on Mattituck School Board meeting:
(2 representatives from NAACP attended) Before thc meeting, Rev.
Dozier, Juanita McKenny and Carolyn Peabody spoke of concerns
for diversity. Goals for last year included concern for diversity.
Pat Fulfort spoke of the importance to her of a mentoring program.
Tracy Taylor demanded action in the schools in providing for
Diversity. Asked to be patient, she explained that she wanted change
Pat and Carolyn sent a letter to the Mattituck School from ABTF -
As point people from ABTF, pleased that they are establishing a
Steerine committee and asked that they be given the name of the
Chairperson and members.
SOUTHOLD: Mike Domino and Jeanne Merkel met with the new Supt.
Gamberg. He has a diverse background. At the School Board
Meetin.o,, a ~nhe~mmittee wa~ formed to advocate for diver~i~.
Wanted to be supportive and provide a network. A difficult job,
but doing the best they could
GREENPORT: Cindy Smith and Marjorie Day will speak with Board.
OYSTERPONDS SCHOOL: Merle Levine still to contact.
Carolyn Peabody advised that there is a body of information on how
oroanizations can diversilv. Su~,~estion - that flyers be sent to Teacher
Training organizations that Southold Town is eager to have diversity in
our schools teaching stalls.
Audrey Horton proposed that we offer a yearly award to the school that
promotes diversity.
Jean Lc Pre added - standards that promote diversity, c/forts to hire diverse
faculty, and commitment to advancing equality.
Both proposals were adopted.
Pltll.lP RFI .TT. came ta the meeting, in connection with the research ~rant
Carolyn Peabody has to do a "climate survey" in the schools, on how
students feel they are treated by others. There were meetings with the
Superintendents of ali the School Districts, including Fishers Island, and
they were all receptive to the study. Southold Town is particularly supportive
and has taken a proactive stand on the concerns for bias and diversity.
SHELTER ISLAND COMPLAINT: Carolyn Peabody met with Letri¢ia
Lawrence to put together the grievance complaint for her Human Rights
Comm. Hearing concerning the incidents in the schhol
SCOTT RUSSESLL has requested monies from the Town Board to pay for
Police "Erase Racism" training.
COMMUNITY PICNIC: Cindy Smith reported - there were lots of people.
Marjorie Day persuaded Peconic Landing to donate two trays of food.
North Fork needs to plan its own Picnic. Audrey Horton suggested that a
Plannine Committee be formed, comprised of people from diverse ~,roups -
to plan for a September 11 date. Next need is a chairperson.
Peter Bel read an advertisement for a part-time nurse in Mattituck. Both
Mm'jorie Day and Merle Levine contacted a mutual friend. She had sent in a
resume in August, but had never had a response.
