Southold, N.Y.,Il971
RECEIVED
T<~w~ Clerk Seutheld~
Ladies and Gentlemen;
At the last regular meeting of the Southold
Fire Police Squad, and again at the meeting of the Southold Town
Fire Police Committee, Oct 21, 1988, a motion was made, seconded,
and carried - that a letter be sent to the Town Board requesting
that they do not issue any more permits for such events Ks "The
Great North Fork Foot Race" that tie up mo many miles o~our highways
and cause so much confusion and conJestion.
We in no way want to interfere with fund raising for charity
or local organizations, or any worthwhile endevor.
However, our town has grown so much, our population has
Jumped so much - particularly in the summer months - that our streets
and highways have not kept up to handle the traffic.
The fire police are always willing t~do their share and to
discharge their dutys, however we feel that being cursed at, threatened
and spit on and having objects thrown at us is an imposition and
uncalled ~gr. I suspect the Town Police have had some similar
experiences.
We all feel that we can handle real emergencies in our own
districts with our own or mutual aid from our neighbering district,
We are concerned about what would happen if there was a real emergency
during such an event, with traffic bamked up, sightseeing spectator~,
and participants of such events using the roads so as to impede the
response of our emergency vehicles and personell.
Our local parades only tie up a short section of one highway
for a short time, wit,~pre-planning we can keep normal traffic moving
reasonably well.
We respectfully request that the Town Board give serious
thought to the problems we are faced with - traffic tieups, too many
events scheduled in the town in any given area on any given day,
and that you will take action to correct these problems.
CeO.
Yours in the best interest and safety of our Town.
