Tohill, PC Roberta Lane, NE Office Program Officer/Attorney National Trust for Historic Preservation Paul Graziano, principal Associated Cultural Resource Consultants The Village of Southampton's Board of Architectural Review and Historic Preservation and the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities present two workshops on the impact of teardowns and the economies of"hardship criteria" in controlling the demolition of historic structures in our region. Workshops are open to the public, but are designed to be of special interest to elected officials and members of architectural review, planning, and historic preservation boards across Long Island. Many towns and villages on Long Island are experiencing high numbers of teardowns. Demolition applications are increasing as land values escalate. Economic hardship criteria are utilized as one of many arguments sup- porting the demolition of historic structures, and the difficulty in defining the extent of"hardship" appears to contribute to the rate of tenrdowns in our historic districts. An examination of these issues and a look at inno- vative zoning strategies designed to prevent exeassive land development will assist members of local architec- tural and historic review boards in their application approval process. The Village of Southampton, with nearly 500 designated resources in four historic district% provides ma ideal ease study for the impact of teardowas and the difficulties of evaluating economic hardship applications. Work- shop participants will have the opportunity to share their issues, questions and enneerns with the guest speakers and with local preservationists. Each workshop is provided free of chargn through funding by the Certified Local Government program of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Laneh is included in this program.
