The design and installation require that the system use FireCraff FTF-13, Class A metal flue, or equal. Also the ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome nssembly must sit on a raised, noncombustible platform. ISOKERN Fireplaces are conventional radiant heat fire- places. The most important areas of concern with the instal- lation of these fireplaces are clesmnce to combustible mate- rials, proper assembly of component parts, load carrying capacity of underlying floor systems, height of chimney sys- tem and the techniques employed in using finishing materi- als applied to the wall surrounding the fireplace and hearth extensions. Each of these topics will be covered in detail through- out this manual. Special attention must be given to each topic as the installation progresses. Note: Illustrations shown in this manual are not to scale and are intended to show "typical" installations. Nominal dimensions are given for design and framing reference only since actual installations may vary due to job specific design preferences. However, always main- tain minimum clearances to combustible materials and do not violate any specific installation requirements. Intended Use Statement: The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application is intended to burn solid wood fuel, propane or natural gas. The fireplace is intended for use as a supplemental heat source only and is not intended for heavy use as a primary heating system. The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application has been tested and listed by Wamock Horsey (Report Nos. J20004277-231 and 632-912500) to UL 127-1999. These units are intended for instalhtion in residential homes, and other buildings of con- ventiooal construction. Note: The local authority having code jurisdiction should be consulted before installation to determine the need to obtain a permit. This fireplace system is designed for installation in accor- dance with the National Fire Protection Association Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel- Burning Appliances (NFPA 21 t ). Overall Height Requirements: The minimum installed height of the completed ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application is 14' 0" iftbe chimney is straight or, 17' 0" where the chinmey includes one offset section. The maximum overall height of the Fire-Lite Application installation is 80' 0". 3/32 Required Clearance to Combustibles Important Information: "Combustibles" are defined as "normal construction materials" considered to be: framing materials, particle board, mill board, plywood paneling, ply- wood subflooring, wood flooring and drywall. The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application is listed for instal- lation with "clearance to combustibles" as follows: Seven and one quarter inches (7-1/4") clearance to the com- bustible floor; Zero inches (0") clearance at the ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome Sides and Front; One and one half inches (1-1/2") clearance at the ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome Back wall; Two inches (2") minimum air space to combustibles at all FireCrafi FTF-13 metal chimney components' outer layer; Three inches (3") clearance to insulation from all Firebox and Smoke Dome and chimney components. Notes: 1. The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application is designed, tested and approved for installation at a minimum of seven and one quarter inches (7-1/4") above combustible floor systems per the installation specifications given in this manual. Any portion of the combustible floor system left exposed under the ISOKERN Base Plate is to be covered with min. 1" thick ceramic fiber insulation board rated to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit (see Figure 2 on pg. 8, fol- lowing). 2. All ISOKERN Fire-Lite Applications result in the finished fire brick floor of the firebox being at least twelve inches (12") above the combustible floor system (Figure 1). 3. The combustible floor in front of the fireplace must be covered with a noncombustible hearth extension material set tight against the fireplace front and extend- ing at least 20 inches out from the finished front of the fireplace and at least 12 inches beyond the finished sides of the fireplace opening (see pg 14). 4. If raised hearth extensions are preferred, the raised structure underlying the noncombustible hearth extension must be built of noncombustible material (Figure 2). 5. It is the responsibility of the building contractor or the project's structural engineer to assure that the com- bustible floor system intended to support the Fire-Lite Application be engineered to carry the loads associated with this installation in addition to any and all other live and dead loads that the floor system would normally be required to carry. (See pg 7, following, for estimated sys- tem weights.) Warning: Combustible objects - such as furniture - I placed in front of the fireplace must be kept to a mini- I mum of 48" clearance to the fireplace opening. ] Fig 2' I~IN. ~' MIN. Failure to follow them could cause fireplace malfunction resulting in serious injury or pmporty damage. Always check local building codes governing fireplaces and fireplace installations. The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application installation must comply with all local, regional, state and national codes and regulations. The ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application must be installed with FireCraWs FTF-13 (12-1/2" inside diameter) Class A Metal Chimney System, or equal. These ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application systems are intended for use in any application where a traditional masonry typo fire- place would apply. The chimney system must always vent to the outside of the building. Creosote and Soot Formation and the Need for Removal: When wood is burned slowly it produces tar and other organic vapors which combine with expolled moisture to form creosote. The creosote vapors con- dense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a slow burn- ing fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hot fire. Because of creosote and soot buildup it is necessary to inspect and clean the fireplace and chimney prior to use and periodically during the heating season. Cleaning of the fireplace and the chimney system should be done annually at a minimum. In colder climates chimney cleaning may need to be done poriodicelly throughout the heating season. See pg 29, "How to Clean". Before servicing, allow the fireplace to cool. Always shut off any electricity or gas to the fireplace while working on it. Use only solid fuel or natural or LP gas log sets in this unit. DO NOT use artificial wax based logs, chemical chimney cleaners or flame colorants in this fireplace. 7. DO NOT use charcoal or coal in the Fire-Lite Application under any circumstances. 8. Never use gasoline, gasoline-type lantern fuel, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, or similar liquids to start or "freshen up" a fire in this fireplace. Keep all flammable liquids at a safe distance from the fireplace. 9. Always keep the flue damper open when heat is present in the fireplace. 10. This fireplace is not intended to heat an entire home or to be used as a primary heat source. It is designed to ensure homeowner comfort by providing supplemental heat to the room. 11. Always ensure that an adequate supply of replacement combustion air from the outside oftbe house is accessi- ble to the fire to support normal combustion. Fireplaces consume large volumes of air during the normal com- bustion process. In the event the home is tightly sealed and with modem energy efficient features, the option- al combustion air supply kits may not provide all the air required to support combustion and the proper flow of combustion gases up the chimney. The manufacturer is not responsible for any smoking or related problems that may result from the lack of ade- quate combustion air. It is the responsibility of the builder/contractor to ensure that adequate combustion air has been provided for the fireplace. 12. "Smoke free" operation is not wananted nor is the manufacturer responsible for inadequate system drafi caused by mechanical systems, general construction conditions, inadequate chimney heights, adverse wind conditions or any unusual environmental conditions or factors beyond the manufacturer's control. 13. DO NOT use a fireplace insert or any other products not specified herein by the manufacturer for use with this fireplace. All gas log sets must be oporated with the damper clamped in the open position. This includes unlisted "vent free" log sets. Listed "vent free" log sets may be operated with the damper closed. 14. Never install a fireplace component, chimney compo- nent or any accessory that has visible or suspected phys- ical damage as a result of handling or transportation. These items should be inspected by your distributor or by a qualified representative to ensure safe condition. When in doubt, consult your distributor. 15. Do not alter or modify metal flue or metal flue compo- nants under any circumstances. Any modification or alteration of the chimney system may void its warranty, listings and approvals and could result in an unsafe and potentially dangerous installation. Modifications to the firebox opening depth and width are acceptable when unit installations are coordinated by an authorized dealer. 16. Wherever insulation is used, the fireplace must not be placed directly against it. Keep all insulation a mini- mum of 3" away from all fireplace and chimney com- ponents. Insulation or vapor barriers, if used, must first be cov- ered with gypsum hoard, plywood, particle board or other material to assure that insulation and vapor barri- ers remain in place. 17. Do not pack or fill required air spaces with insulation or other material. No material is allowed in these spaces. 18. kNEVER leave children unattended when there is a fire burning in the fireplace. 5/32 ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application: OVERVIEW ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application, consists of four basic Groups of Components: Group 1. Combustible Floor System Group 2. Noncombustible Raised Platform Group 3. ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome Group 4. FireCraft FTF-13 Metal Chimney Each of the four groups of components will be described and illustrated in sequence in the following pages. Close attention should be paid to each group's specifications and installation requirements as described in this manual. Important Information: Air Flow Function of the Fire-Lite Installation The Fire-Lite Application is a radiant heat system and functions like any traditional radiant heat, solid fuel burning fireplace. When in operation a considerable amount of beat can be driven through the bottom oftbe unit. The design of the Fire-Lite Application is such that the normal buildup of radiant heat under the bottom of the ISOKERN Fireplace is reduced to acceptable limits by let- ting air flow into the 7-1/4" space created under the ISOK- ERN Base Plate by the Noncombustible Raised Platform. Air from a remote source must be allowed to flow into the 7-1/4" space under the ISOKERN Base Plate through non-combustible ducts that must be mn from the remote source of air into the openings left at each end of the Noncombustible Raised Platform. The "remote source air" can be from any of the follow- ing sources: (a) the room in which the unit is installed, (b) the exterior of the structure or, (c) another interior space adjoining the installation. Hot air build-up under the ISOKERN Base Plate with- in the Noncombustible Raised Platform is moved out from the area within the Raised Platform through the openings left at the rear of the Raised Platform by heat convection. The hot air continues moving up along the outside of the back wall of the ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome through the 1-1/2" space left between the ISOKERN unit and the wall built behind the ISOKERN unit. (See Figures 1, 2 and 3 on pg 4 preceding.) Hot air moving up the back of the ISOKERN unit is then drawn into the metal flue's chimney chase cavity where it rises and dissipates through the chase area. Notes: 1. Due to the necessity to move hot air from under the ISOKERN Firebox and into the interior area of the chimney chase be sure to maintain the clearances listed in this manual for each component and component group in the Fire-Lite Application. 2. Be sure all metal flue and flue components are list- ed Class A for solid fuel. G GROUP 3 6/32 GROUP 1 Components: Combustible Floor System Floor Joists As Designed By Your Structural Engineer Important Information: Floor framing for proposed ISOKERN Fire-Lite Application installation will need to be designed and built to accept substantial dead loads spread over a relatively small floor area. The following weights and sizes can be used to calcu- late Fire-Lite loading. Consult with local structural engineer for proper sizing of structural floor frame members for spe- cific installations. Fire-Lite Application Load Calculations: Total dead load amounts include (but are not necessarily limited to) the following items and their corresponding weight estimates listed below: 1. ISOKERN unit model weights: a. Model 3600 FP: 1500 lb b. Model 4200 FP: 1700 lb c. Model 4600 FP: 1700 lb 2. Damper, fire brick and mortar: 450 lb. 3. Concrete block raised platform: 320 lb. 4. Fireplace finished facing: approx. 200 lb. 5. Weight of metal flue: negligible By adding the weight of the appropriate ISOKERN Model listed in gl above to the allowance given for each item in 2 through 5, above, the total weight oftbe Fire-Lite Application can be estimated. Total Appmximata Fire-Lite System Weight Estimates for each Model: 3600 FP ~ 1500 lb + items 2 thru 5 ~ 970 = 2470 lb 4200 FP (~ 1700 lb + items 2 thru 5 ~ 970 = 2670 lb 4600 FP (~ 1700 lb + items 2 thru 5 (~ 970 = 2670 lb The Floor Area for each model is as follows: Model 3600 FP ~ 43" x 25,25" = 7.54 sq. fl. Model 4200 FP (~ 49" x 25.25" = 8.60 sq. ft. Model 4600 FP (~ 53" x 25.25" = 9.30 sq. ft. Notes: 1. These dead load totals are in addition to the live load and other dead load requirements for the specific site's proposed floor. 2. The load estimates given above for items other than those produced by ISOKERN are esfimat~s only and may not accurately define total loads related to the completed fireplace due to material choices that are at owner option. 3. ISOKERN is not responsible for structural floor support details for this fireplace system. Unless other- wise noted all floor framing drawings in this manaal are merely illustrations to indicate the presence of an under- lyiug floor system. 4. Consult your local structural engineer for proper floor system design, sizing and specifications. 7/32 GROUP 2 Components: Noncombustible Raised Platform I Clearance to Combustible Floor: The ISOKERN Fire Box most be supported at least 7-1/4 inches above the combustible floor. A Noncombustible Raised Platform (described below) must be constructed upon which the ISOKERN will sit. The Noncombustible Raised Platform must be set with a minimum 1-1/2 inch clearance to the wall directly behind the Fire-Lite Assembly. Construction of the Raised Platform: Nominal 8 inch concrete block units (rated ASTM 90) are to be laid on the combustible floor surface and arranged in such a way as to equal the width and length of the Base plate for the model of ISOKERN Fireplace that is to be installed (Figures I and 2). Step 1: Set the concrete block units at the front of the Raised Platform with the hollow sections in the vertical position, for support of the ISOKERN unit. Step 2: Set a nominal 8 x 8 x 8 inch concrete block with the hollow section in the vertical at each of the rear comers of the Raised Platform, for structural support of the ISOK- ERN unit. Step 3: Set concrete block units between the 8 x 8 x 8 inch rear comer blocks with the hollow sections in the horizontal position to allow for the flow of air. Step 4: Set concrete block units at the ends of the Raised Platform at the mid-line of the Base Plate depth with hollow sections in the horizontal position and lefl open to connect with a remote soume of air for in-flow. Note: For alternate noncombustible raised platform construction see: Appendix I and 2: "Optional Metal Raised Platform", pgs. 30 and 31, following. Step 5: Metal safety strip - a generic 26 ga., 4" wide galva- nized metal strip - must be inserted to approximately 2" beneath the concrete block units at the front of the Noncombustible Raised Platform. The safety strips must extend out from the front of the Raised Platform at least 2 inches and must extend to at least 2 inches beyond the ends of the Raised Platform. Any overlaps in the length of the safety strips should be a minimum of 2" for continual coverage of the combustible floor at the front of the fireplace. Step 6: The exposed combustible floor within the perimeter formed by the Noncombustible Raised Platform must be completely covered with one inch thick ceramic fiber insu- lation board (figure 2). The board is dry laid to the floor within the block perimeter. The ceramic fiber board must have a thermal conduc- tivity rating equal to or greater than 0.4 Btu-in/hr-sq.fl- degree Fahrenheit. (Reference: Harbison-Walker, 600 Grant St., Pittsburgh, PA 15219, ph. 412-562-6200: "Insboard 2300" or equal.) Figure 1 Figure 2 8/32 GROUP 3 Components: ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome Air Flow Passages Figure I 150KERN MORTAR General Information: The ISOKERN Fireplace is a modular refractory fire- place unit designed for field assembly. The fireplace unit includes all the parts necessary for assembly of a complete Firebox and Smoke Dome. The ISOKERN components consist of intarlocking precast parts which fit together using a thin-set type mortar for bonding mating components together. The parts oftbe system are cast using a proprietary mix- ture of volcanic pumice aggregate and aluminate cement. Each component of the ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome is designed for a specific part of the fireplace and is fashioned such that only one means of assembly is possible. The design oftbe ISOKERN allows for a standard cast iron throat damper to be fitted into the assembly. The completed ISOKERN unit requires a standard refractory fire brick liner, a minimum 1-1/8" thick, be applied to the interior of the Firebox. The ISOKERN Firebox and Smoke Dome Assembly is tested and listed by Intartek Testing Services/Wamock Hersey International in WHI Test Report No. 632-912500. Field Assembly Rules and Procedures: Rule 1: ISOKERN Mortar: ISOKERN Mortar (a thin-set masonry adhesive) is to be used to glue all ISOKERN pre- cast components together during field assembly of the unit. The mortar is supplied premixed and dry. The ISOKERN Mortar must be thoroughly mixed with clean water to a workable mixture that is smooth, without lumps or dry pockets and ora "toothpaste" consistency. This mixture is suitable for application onto components by use of a standard masonry grout bag. Attention should be paid that the mortar mixture is not too thin or runny, as this will not allow the mortar to reach its maximum bonding strength. Note: Mix ISOKERN Mortar only with clean water when using it to assemble ISOKERN components. Rule 2: Assembly of the ISOKERN Components: Once the ISOKERN Mortar is mixed and loaded into a grout bag it is squeezed out and onto the contact surfaces oftbe ISOK- ERN components as they are fitted together. Typical mortar procedure is to lay a one half inch bead of ISOKERN Mortar approximately one half inch in from all edges of the contact surface of each component (Figure 1). Setting the next mating component onto the mortared contact surface of the first component should cause some mortar to squeeze out of the face of the joint as a sign of complete and proper sealing of the joint. Since some of the component contact surfaces are broader areas it is advisable to apply several additional half inch beads of the ISOKERN Mortar onto these larger con- tact surfaces to assure proper sealing. 9/32 Rule 3: Leveling And Aligning Components: Be sure to assemble all ISOKERN components flush, level and square. ISOKERN Mortar is not intended to create a mortar joint of any thickness (typical when laying brick or concrete block). Adjustments in component height and level align- merits are made by the use of small plastic shims (supplied with the unit). The shims can be tapped into place under a component to level and align its height with adjacent ISOKERN com- ponents (Figure 2). Afler adjustment of level and height alignments and once the ISOKERN mortar has set, the shims can be cut off flush at the insertion point or removed all together. Be sure to re-grout any and all gaps where shims have been inserted and then removed or where contact surfaces have been separated by shim leveling. With all contact surfaces properly mortared an ISOK- ERN Firebox and Smoke Dome assembly requires approxi- mately five eleven-pound bags of ISOKERN Mortar. Notes: 1. The maximum recommended mortar joint thick- ness at ISOKERN components is 1/4". 2. ISOKERN Mortar can be troweled over the face of a joint where it has squeezed out when setting mating components. It is not intended that the exposed faces of ISOKERN components be completely covered with the mortar. Fireplace Assembly Steps: Step 1: Set the ISOKERN Fireplace Base Plate fiat on the CMU platform (CMU to be rated ASTM 90). Set the Base Plate in a bed oflSOKERN Mortar mak- ing sure that the Base Plate is in full contact with the Raised Platfon'n (Figure 3). Note: If the Noncombustible Raised Platform is not exactly level it is best not to level the ISOKERN Base Plate thus put- ting the Base Plate in span. Rather put offany necessary lev- eling of the Firebox until the Side Wall and Back Wall assembly are complete. Then level as described below in Step 3. Step 2: Set the first course of the Firebox Back Wall and Side Walls into place. It ]nay be convenient dry set the first course of Side Wall and Back Wall on the 1SOKERN Base Plate and trace their position on the Base Plate with a pencil (Figure 3). Remove the dry set pieces and then apply ISOKERN Mortar to the areas traced on the Base Plate where the Side Walls and Back Wall will sit. By doing this the first layer of Wall components can be set directly into mortar already applied to the proper areas on the Base Plate (Figure 4). Be sure to put [SOKERN mortar on the contact surfaces of the vertical joints where the Side Wail and Back Wall components connect (Figure 5). Figure 2 ~ Figure 5 10 / 32 Figure 6 CAS! IRON Figure 7 ~ /-- CAST IRON Figure 8 Continue with the assembly of the second and third courses of the Fire Box Side Wall and Back Wall. Apply mortar to the top of each layer of wall components, setting the next course above into mortar already applied to the hor- izontal contact surface oftbe previous course. Be sure to mortar all vertical joints of the Side Wall to Back Wall connection when setting each component to its mate (Figure 5). Look for some ISOKERN Mortar to squeeze out along all joints of contact surfaces as sign that the joint is thor- oughly sealed with ISOKERN Mortar. Step 3: When all of the Firebox wall components are set check the top surface for level. If necessary adjust the top surface of the box assembly for level by inserting a shim between the lowest wall component and the top surface of the ISOKERN Base Plate (Figure 2). Any gap created under the wall components during the leveling process can be filled to full bearing against the Base Plate with Isokem Mortar. Step 4: Make sure that the Firebox assembly has been set level and square. Adjust as required while the [SOKERN Mortar is still wet. Make a final inspection of all contact joints in the Firebox assembly to be sure they am properly sealed. Fill any and all gaps in the assembly, as necessary, with ISOK- ERN Mortar. Step 5: Begin the Smoke Dome assembly by setting the rear Bottom Smoke Dome component in a bed of ISOKERN Mortar on top of the Firebox Back Wall assembly fitting it flush with the backside of the Firebox (Figure 6). Place two of the Damper Lifter Blocks in mortar tight against the inside face of the rear Bottom Smoke Dome component. These two Damper Lifter Blocks should sit in such a way that their beveled face matches the inward angle oftbe Firebox Back Wall below it (Figure 6). Set the remaining two Damper Lifler Blocks in place on top of the Firebox Side Walls approximately three inches (3") in from the outside face of the Firebox Side Wall and tight against the ends of the Damper Lifters already in place along the back Wall (Figure 7). Note that these Damper Lifters are set on the Firebox Side Walls so that their widest face is down and their beveled edge is facing out toward the the outside of the Firebox. This bevel matches the slope of the Smoke Dome side walls that will be set later (Figure 7). Step 6: Set the cast iron throat damper on top oftbe Damper Lifter Blocks so that the damper's operating plate is up and faces toward the back of the Firebox (Figure 7). Step 7: Set the front Bottom Smoke Dome component across the Firebox opening so that it is flush with the front face of the Firebox Side Walls (Figure 8). Once the lower Smoke Dome front component is set be sure that the cast iron damper's front flange is positioned tight against the inside face of the front Smoke Dome com- ponent (Figure 9). 11 /32 At this point the rear and the end flanges of the cast iron damper are all sitting on the Damper Lifter Blocks (Figure 7). Step 8: Position the Smoke Dome's Sloping Sidewalls at each end of the Lower Smoke Dome components (Figure 8). The Sloping Sidewalls fit in between the front and rear Smoke Dome components and also fit into the haunches at the ends of the front and rear Smoke Dome components. Note: (1) The Smoke Dome Sloping Sidewalls have a beveled bot- tom edge so that they will sit tight onto the fiat top of the Firebox Side Walls. (2) The Damper Lifter Blocks that mn from front to back and sit on the Firebox Side walls, when positioned correctly, fit tight against the inside of the Smoke Dome Sloping Sidewalls (Figure 8). Step 9: Next set the Upper course of front and rear Smoke Dome components dir~tly on top of and aligned with the bottom front and bottom rear Smoke Dome components that are akeady in place. Set the two upper Smoke Dome Sloping Sidewalls into position, one at each end of the upper front and rear Smoke Dome components (Figure 10). Step 10: Make sure that all component contact surfaces have been properly sealed with ISOKERN mortar. Check Smoke Dome front and back walls to see that they are plumb, level and in alignment with mating compo- nents. Check alignment of the Smoke Dome Sloping Sidewall components to see that they are flush with one another and create smooth and uniform Smoke Dome Sidewalls for the total height of the Smoke Dome. Step 11: Set the Smoke Dome Top Plate into position on top of the Smoke Dome wall assembly (Figure 11). Be sum to set the Smoke Dome Top Plate flush with the front, back and sides of the Smoke Dome assembly. Note: (1) The flue hole in the Top Plate is centered in the Smoke Drone from side to side but is offset towards what is the back of the Top Plate. Make sure that the flue hole in the Top Plate is closer to the back wall of the Smoke Dome assembly. (2) The completed Smoke Dome assembly should present a stable and level surface for setting the flue components (Figure 11). (3) Setting the Smoke Dome Top Plate completes the ISOK- ERN Firebox and Smoke Dome assembly. The unit is now ready for the installation of the required fire brick lining and the FireCraft FTF-13 flue components. Figure 9 ISOKERN --F CAST IRON DAMPER FLANGE 0AUPER Figure 10 Figure 11 12 / 32 ~--~ EXPN~SION Il Vg' c~ ~\ FiRE BRICK FLOOR .~O BACK (BUILT FIRST) Isokem makes no claims as to the performance of fire brick or fire brick mortar(s). It is typical for heat stress cracks to appear in the fire br cks n wood bum ng fireplaces. Fire Brick Lining: The manufacturer requires that the ISOKERN Firebox be lined with a 1-1/8" (minimum) thick rated fire brick liner. Thicker rated fire brick may be used as an option. The pat- tern for the fire brick lining is not specified and is an owner option. All required Through Wall Accesses (Gas and Electrical Line feeds and Combustion Air Supply access holes) should be drilled before the required fire brick lining is installed (see page 15). Mortar for applying the fire brick to the inside of the ISOKERN Firebox needs to be suitable to both adhere the fire brick to the inside of the firebox and to create the fin- ished face joints of the brick work. Based on a history of field applications a successful fire brick installation can be accomplished by using a mortar mix similar to the following: 6 parts masonry sand 2 parts Portland cement (S-type) I part fire clay Mix with clean water to a workable consistency. Notes: 1. Wet mop the inside of the ISOKERN Firebox with n damp sponge to remove dust and loose particles from the interior before fire bricking. 2. It takes a total of about five gallons of mortar mix (dry measure) to complete the fire brick lining of a stan- dard ISOKERN Firebox. 3. A maximum face joint dimension of 1/4 inch to 5/16 inch should be maintained in the brick work. 4. The fire brick work at the front edges of the ISOKERN Firebox must provide straight and true edges to join with the application of code required noncom° bustible facing materials (by others). Suggested Fire brick Sequence: (1) Start fire brick at the Floor of the ISOKERN Firebox beginning at the front edge of the unit floor and proceeding inward toward the back wall. Let the floor brick gap approximately 1/2" off the ISOKERN Back Wall and Side Walls. This air space is for heat expansion of the fire brick and is to be left empty of mortar. (2) Apply fire brick to the Back Wall of the unit. The Back Wall fire brick will cover the expansion gap left at the brick floor along the Back Wall of the Firebox. When setting the Back Wall fire brick leave a 1/2" (approximate) expansion gap at each end of the Back Wall fire brick to the Side Walls of the Firebox interior. (3) Set the Side Wall fire brick by starting at the front edge of the unit's Side Wall and working inward toward the Back Wall fire brick. The Side Wall fire brick, when finished, will cover the expausion gaps left where both the Floor fire brick and the Back Wall fire brick were held off of the ISOKERN unit's Side Walls. 13 / 32 Fireplace Finishes and Clearance to Combustible Trim: 1. Hearth Extensions. All ISOKERN Fireplaces shall have hearth extensions of brick, concrete, stone, tile or other code approved noncombustible material. Suitable hearth extension material for the Fire-Lite can be placed on the combustible floor in front of the Fire-Lite's Noncombustible Raised Platform. Since all standard ISOKERN fireplaces have finished openings greater than six square feet the hearth extension, by code, shall extend at least 20" in front of the fireplace facing material and at least 12" beyond each side of the fireplace finished opening. Metal safety strips - 26 ga. galvanized metal strips 4" wide - must be laid on the floor under the Noncombustible Raised Platform extending half under the Platform and half under the hearth extension material (see Figure 1 and Figure 2, pg. 8). Warning: The crack between the fireplace front and the non- combustible hearth extension must be sealed with a non- combustible material. 2. Mantle and Mantle Shelf Clearances. ISOKERN Fireplaces are subject to the same building code safety clear- ances to combustible trim as with any radiant heat fireplaces having openings of six square feet or greater: All combustible mantles and similar trim shall be kept to at least 6 inches from the fireplace opening. PaRRs of the mantle assembly located along the sides of the fireplace opening, which project more than 1-1/2 inches from the face of the fireplace, shall have additional clearance equal to the projection. Parts of the mantle assembly located above and projecting more than I-1/2 inches from the fireplace open- ing shall not be placed less than 12 inches from the top of the fireplace opening. Note: It is advisable that combustible mantle shelves have clearances additional to the 12 inch minimum that are equal to the projection of the shelf. For example a 10 inch wide shelf should be 20 inches above the fireplace opening (Figure 1). 3. Adjoining Walls. Side walls and walls to rooms adjoining Fire-Lite Application installations cannot be closer than 24" to the finished fireplace opening under any circumstances (Figure 2). Note: "Clearance to Combustible Trim" are those distances required to ensure that a fireplace mantle or facing will not catch fire. In most cases the distances should also be ade- quate to prevent any discoloration or warping due to heat. However each installation presents a unique and completely different set of circumstances involving many variables. These include paint or finish composition, previous expo- sure to heat, methods and quality of construction, air flow patterns, glass doors, etc. Because of these variables, the manufacturer cannot guarantee tinct heat warping or discol- oration will never occur. Combustion Air Inlet: Whereas combustion air inlet is not required by ISOKERN its installation can help to ensure good fireplace operation in homes which are tightly weather sealed or have other ventilating appliances installed. Local codes shall govern the requirements for outside combus- tion air supply. A generic masonry fireplace combustion air access tube can be introduced into the ISOKERN Firebox through the Side Wall or the Back Wall of the Firebox. Core drill an appropriately sized hole at the chosen Firebox wall location keeping the hole at least three inches above the rough Firebox floor. The finished hole size should allow for a 1/4" mortar joint around the air access tube for thermal expansion. The finished combustion air kit's access door needs to be fitted into the finished fire brick lining of the ISOKERN Firebox. The combustion air kit's sleeve that passes through the Firebox wall must be connected to metal conduit, either flex- ible or rigid, that leads to the soorce for outside combustion air, as directly as practicable, which can be through an out- side wall or into a ventilated crawl space (Figure 1). Warning: Avoid installing the combustion air inlet where the opening could be blocked by snow, bushes or other obstacles. The maximum height for the combustion air inlet is $0 feet above the hearth, provided the air inlet is terminated a minimum of three feet below the chimney cap level. 2. Gas Line Feed: The provision for installation of a gas pipe is intended only for connection to a decorative gas appliance. The decorative gas appliance must comply with the Standard for Decorative Gas Appliances for Installation in Vented Fireplaces, ANSI Z21.60. The decorative gas appliance should be installed in accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223. I. Gas piping for decorative gas log sets used in the ISOK- ER_N Firebox can be routed through the Side Wall, Back Wall or Floor of the Firebox by drilling an appropriately sized hole using a masonry drill bit (Figure 2). Be sure to follow the gas Appliance Manufacturer's explicit gas line connection instructions for installation into vented masonry fireplaces. 3. Electrical Line Feed: Electrical line feed can be routed through the ISOKERN Firebox Back Wall, Side Walls or floor by drilling an appropriately sized hole using a mason- ry drill bit (Figure 2). Be sure to follow the gas log Appliance Manufacturer's explicit electrical line connection instructions for vented masonry fireplace installations. 1. Gas Line and Electric Line must be fed through 2. It is required that all access holes be grouted with mortar to seal any gaps, cracks or crevices arouad line feed conduits (Figure 3). 15/32 ISOKERN FIREBOX and SMOKE DOME DIMENSIONS ~/~' FIREBOX; SECTION A FIREBOX: FRONT ELEVATION FIREBOX: PLAN SECTION WEIGHT: MODEL "A' "B" "C" '0' "[' "F' MINIMUM FRAMING: FIREBOX: 36" 43" 36" 22 I/2' 2( 33 7/8' 37' 44"w x 79'H* x 27'0 1,500 lbs, 42" 49" 44" 22 l/2" 30" ~8 7/8" 4,~ 50'W x 8TH* x 27"D 1,700 lbs. 46" 53' 36" 33 I/2' 3( 43 7/8" 47' 54'W x 7g"H* x 27'0 1,700 lbs, INCLUDES A NOMINAL 8' FOR C.M.U. ~E ISOKERN FIREBOX and SMOKE DOME COMPONENTS LIST pART FIREPLACE QUANTITY: NO.: SLZE: 36 36"W I 36 ¢2"W TOP PLATE.
