Dear Supe ! ,:. ?
I'd like to respond to your recent letter regarding our water main extension to Browns Hill
Road in Orient. Over the last several years the Town and the SCWA have forged a partnership
regarding the installation of water mains to make certain that public water availability is consistent
w/th available supply and the Town's comprehensive plan.
"i, '; 'tn an effort to continue this partnership, we have indicated right from my f~st visit to the
Town Board on April 7, 2009 and then subsequently ~ith the:SCDHS(in,your office on August 19,
2009, that we would want to classif5' this main extensi0n'is~a tmnsintYsion main. The water within it
would only be available, in the first instance, to existing premises served by private wells. Such is still
the case. Over the past few years we have installed, in five areas of the town, over 31,500 linear feet
of water main classified as "transmission", without precipitating unplanned development.
As regards the Water Supply Map, the community of Browns Hill in Orient has always been
on the map since adoption of the fwst common map in 2000. The funding offer from the
Environmental Facilities Corporation, not yet in contract, will provide a loan and grant to feed this
stand-alone system via a water main extension from East Marion. We recently completed a similar
main extension (albeit without outside funding subsidy) of some 10,000 linear feet in Montauk,
which will allow us to shut down the stand-alone Camp Hero system serving a 27 home
development there.
We appreciate your move to schedule a public hearing to amend the Water Supply Map, as
you so indicate in your letter. We feel confident that, given existing private well tests showing poor
quality water, coupled with the possibility of high quality pubhc water availability and enhanced ftre
protection, that the Town Board will not want to deprive the existing citizens along the route from
having access to this vital resource, in the interests of public health and safety.
