The run, including route and rest stops, is described in the third paragraph of this letter. The Suffolk County Historical Society is a private, not-for-profit institution, chartered by the Board of Regents in New York State. On September 14, 2008, the Suffolk County Historical Society will sponsor a bicycle ride in conjunction with its upcoming exhibition Full Freedom and Joyous Exhilaration: Early Bicycling on Long Island. The exhibit opens on June 14, 2008 and we feel that the bicycle ride will be the perfect culminating event. It will draw attention to the Suffolk County Historical Society; help raise funds for the care of our historic building, and showcase the beauty and rural nature of both Riverhead and Southold Towns. The bicycle run will begin in the parking lot behind the museum at 8:30 a.m. The group will travel along Roanoke Avenue in Riverhead, to Northville Turnpike, Sound Avenue to Penny's Avenue and then proceed to Iron Pier Beech for a rest stop in the Town Parking area. From there we will go south on Pier Avenue, then east on Sound Avenue to Hallockville, the second rest stop. Continue east to the Southold Town Beach for the third rest stop, and then proceed into Greenport via Main Street, to the Carousel for the fourth rest stop. The group will then move west to Bay Avenue in Mattituck, south to Peconic Bay Boulevard and stop at the Jamesport Beach Parking lot for the fifth and final rest stop. They will then follow Peconic Bay Boulevard to Fairway Avenue in Riverhead, make a left on Elton Avenue, then left onto Northville Turnpike, then Roanoke Avenue to Rail Road Street and back to the parking lot behind the museum. We estimate that the group will complete the 50-mile ride by 2:30 p.m. We are grateful to Officer John Seal, Riverhead Police Department, for his assistance in organizing this event and laying out the route. The historical society plans to have at least one van available to pick up stranded cyclists who suffer equipment problems or wish to stop for any reason. Several EXHIBITS / LIBRARY / PROGRAMS / WEATHERVANE GIFT SHOP automobiles will follow the route throughout the ride to keep any eye out for problems. They will communicate via cell phones. Volunteers who will dispense fresh fruit and beverages to cyclists will man all the rest stops, and the society will be responsible for leaving the rest stops clean and clear of debris. Two local bicycle shops will help with emergency repairs. Since the ride will travel through both Riverhead and Southold towns, and we plan to use town property for the rest stops, we are writing to inform you and to make sure that there are no problems or objections to the route or use of town properties. Although we have not begun registering participants, we wish to do so as soon as possible. Please review our plans, as outlined in this letter, and let me know if we can proceed, as soon as possible. I have enclosed material about the historical society and the bicycle exhibit, for your review. I have sent similar letters to this to the individuals listed at the end of this letter. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call on me. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Sincerely, Wallace W. Broege Director Phil Cardinale, Riverhead Town Supervisor David J.
