Dear Mr. Pearson:
This letter is a follow-up to my May 12th letter regarding the Griffin Street & Route
25 traffic issues in Cutchogue.
The Town Board met on June 2nd and reviewed these issues and possible
solutions once again. At the end, they asked the Commission to contact the
NYSDOT with the following request.
The Town Board would like to invite your Department to present the findings of
the DOT study via a virtual simulation of the traffic modeling at this site. This
could be a public information meeting, giving all the options with respect to such
things as one-way traffic going South and right-turn-only exiting Griffin Street,
parking restrictions, and coordinated traffic signalization. This would give the
public a chance to understand what is at stake and participate in the prospective
solution while minimizing negative impacts.
Of particular note is the fact that the Town instituted a program several years
ago, creating stakeholders groups for each of the hamlets and involving them in
the planning process in Southoid. The Cutchogue stakeholders have identified
the Griffin Street and the New Suffolk Road intersections of pdmary importance
in resolving traffic issues for their hamlet.
I would appreciate it greatly if your office could let me have two or three possible
dates for scheduling such a meeting. You can reach me at 734-6235,
Mr. Frank Pearson Page 2
Thank you for considering this request favorably and for all your efforts on behalf
of Southold.

Griffin Street & Route 25 Issues, Cutchogue
This memorandum is a follow-up to our memorandum dated August 4th. Attached
is a copy of the referenced NYSDOT August 28th letter indicating it is the Town's
responsibility to decide what it wanted for this location.
We again reviewed all the issues attendant to this intersection dudng our August
24th meeting. Frankly, there are very few options available to us given the many
competing interests and passions within the community at the present time.
We would like, however, to recommend at the present time that two or three
parking slots be removed on the north side of Route 25 going east from Griffin
Street in order to improve the sighting distance for traffic coming out on Route
25. This recommendation is dictated by strong safety concerns we share. There
is, in fact, ample town parking available behind these buildings to accommodate
this shift.
Should the Town Board ultimately decide not to act on this recommendation, the
Commission agreed to table these issues for the time being.
Please let me know how you wish to proceed after reviewing this memorandum
with the Town Board.

Safety Concerns
Route 25 at Griffin Street
Cutchogue
Our Case No. 099410TC
Dear Mr. Brashich:
This is in response to your letter requesting that our Department present the findings of our recent
studY at the above location.
Previously, the findings of our study were presented to you and members of the Town for
consideration. Our study did not show a safety deficiency that would require immediate action by
our Department. However, we did outline several options for the Town, Transportation
Commission and stakeholder groups to consider in order to address their concerns, specifically:
additional parking restrictions on Route 25, restricting southbound Griffin Avenue to right tums
only, changing Griffin Avenue to a one-way operation, either northbound or southbound or the
possible signalization of this intersection.
As these proposals have minimal effect on Route 25 operations and directly impact the operation
of the Town roads, and thereby the local residents, we believe these issues are best evaluated by
the Town~ If you need any additional information or have any questions, please feel free to
contact Michael Ufko, of my staff, at (631) 952-6020.

Parking Concerns
Route 25 at Griffin Street
Cutchogue
Our Case No. 099372TC
Dear Mr. Brashich:
We have completed our investigation regarding your request to remove the "No Stopping
Anytime" restriction on the north side of Route 25 just west of Griffin Street in Cutchogue.
As a result of study, we will restore parking on the north side of Route 25, west of Griffin Street,
opposite the Cutchogue Diner in Cutchogue. The sign work to remove the existing restrictions will
be completed by our Maintenance Group as soon as their work schedule permits.
For your information, these parking spaces may need to be removed in the future if an eastbound
Route 25 lef~ turn lane into Griffin Street is installed.
Thank you for your interest in this traffic safety matter.
Very truly yours,
