Dear Bernadette,
Your phone message was passed on to the Transportation Committee for their review and
immediate action. I'm also alerting the Police Department in the hopes that they can patrol
the area more diligently to control the speed of motorists on Route 48.
While we are all grateful that the accident was not more serious, I think it helps to
underscore the need for serious consideration of traffic restraint on at the intersections on
Route 48. I will continue to support this restraint and am hopeful that the Suffolk County
Department of Public Works will reach the same conclusion.
Sincerely yours,
Jean W. Cochran

Bernadette Petersl~n call to see if you had gotten her letter about installing a
traffic light on Depot Lane & Route 48 re get the traffice to slow down as an
accident was waiting to happen.
I told her a letter went out to her yesterday in response.
She wanted to add a PS to her letter.
The accident has happened! One block west of Depot, at Alvah's Lane &
Route 48, a car hit the school bus this morning. Although her daughter was
not seriously injured; other children on the bus were injured when the car hit
the bus and went underneath it. The woman driving (too fast on Route 48)
was injured and taken to the hospital.
Ms. Petersen will be sending you another letter.

Hi Jean,
I like what you've done but I am asking (again) for you te put a full stop light on
Route 48 at the comer of Depot Lane in Cutchogue. Whatever the results of the
testing you did at this intersection, this light is a definite MUSTHAVE.
It is only a matter of time until someone (probably a kid) is injured or killed. Do
you remember what happened to have a proper traffic light installed at the
intersection of Routes 105 end 43 (Northville Tpke.)?
Jean, do this and you will prevent a
Tragedy. The other groat benefit is
A slower pace for the traffic on Rte
48 (NOW cARS TRA~d- AT ?0+ mL~SlHR).
Please let me know your decision (734-5315). This is important to a lot of folks.
Regards; ....
Bernadette,-

Dear Mr. Jacobs:
I have been communicating with Jean Cochran for a year concerning the traffic
on Route 48. A standard traffic signal is seriously needed at the intersection of
Route 48 and Depot Lane in Cutchogue. As a resident on the north side of
Route 48, I cannot cross Route 48 with my children on bike or foot without risking
our lives. The average vehicle travels at 70+ miles per hour on Route 48.
On Wednesday, October 27th I was told my children's school bus was hit while at
a full stop on Route 48 (intersection of Alvahs Lane). 29 children were on that
bus. People are going too fast on this road - a traffic light would help residents
cross 48 and traffic to slow down.
Please respond in writing as to my chances of seeing this done before a child is
seriously injured or killed.
Your name was referred to me by Kathy Kirsch Mequin. Thank you for
considering the importance of my request.
Sincerely,
