Executive Search and Recruitment Mr. Tom Oelerich Regional Traffic Engineer New York State Department of Transportation 250 Veterans Memorial Highway Hauppauge, New York 11788 Dear Mr. Oelerich: According to the Letters to the Editor column of the TRAVELER WATCHMAN, you recently received a letter from Ms. Jean McCoy in Southold requesting that a sign be posted at the intersection of Route 25 and Oaklawn Avenue in Southold, reminding motorists of the "Yield to Pedestrians in a Crosswalk" law. Ms. McCoy is right on target, but I don't believe that the sign is the answer. That intersection is the proverbial "accident waiting to happen" and warrants a standard traffic light before someone is killed. Ms. McCoy mentioned school children crossing from extracurricular activities after the school guard has departed. But Southold has a large senior citizen population and many of them must cross at that intersection to attend Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Also, on Sunday morning and during the busy season, which is now very lengthy, it is practically impossible for an automobile traveling north on Oaklawn to turn right, or particularly left, onto Route 25. My former office used to be near the intersection of Horton's Lane and Route 48 and I saw several accidents resulting in serious injtmy over a ten year period before a light was installed. I shudder to think what may happen at the intersection of Oaldawn and 25, which has numerous more pedestrians, particularly children. I respectfully request that this location be addressed as quickly as possible. ~__._~0 rellA'' ' h J.
