RE: CR 48, Middle Road ~ Southold Town Landfill
Dear Superv~
We 'ha-Y~estigated conditions at the above-referenced location in response to your
request. As part of this investigation, we analyzed traffic accidents for the three-year period, 1998
to 2000. There were nine accidents during this period, only two of which occurred in 2000. There
were five (5) right-angle type accidents, indicating a visibility and speed problem at this location.
This Department will modify the placement markings on CR 48, Middle Road at the intersection, to
improve the definition of this location.
We would also ask the Town of Southold to prohibit westbound left-tums at the
intersection to reduce motorist confusion and eliminate potential conflicts. We will also re-grade
the entrance to the landfill with new pavement to improve the level at which vehicles enter CR 48,
Middle Road. In order to maintain a clear line of sight to the east, parking will have to be restricted
for 550' east of the landfill access road. Please enact an ordinance for this restriction and post the
necessary signs. We believe that the implementation of these actions will greatly improve the
safety of this location.
If you have any questions or require additional information concerning this matter, contact
either myself or William S. Shannon, Chief Engineer of Highways/Waterways at 852-4002.

Dear Bill:
Thc Town of Southold is extremely concerned over the intersection of Route 48 and Zack's Lane near the
landfill. There have been a number of automobile accidents as cars enter and leave the landfill. Equally
important is the serious mad run-off in the area.
Thc Town Board has requested that thc Commi.qqiolt wurk closely with Suffolk County DPW so as to find
solutions to these problems. Thc Supen4sor needs to be kept apprised of our findings.
This whole matter was discussed yesterday at the Commission's monthly meeting in the presence of two
of your staff memhers. Jim Peterman promised to visit the site after hearing the strong concerns regarding
safety and mn-off issues voiced by Police Chief Cochran and Highway Superintendent Jacobs.
t ~ould propose that a meeting be set up at a later date following internal di~xtssions ~ithirt 5~aur
department as to potential altematiye solutions. This effort could be linked to DPW's future efforts to
reanfface additional se~ions of Rma~ 48. Obviously timing would need to be identified early on in tl~
process. Please let me know your decision on this matter.
Sincerely,
Noboyslm R. Braslfich
